I agree, the dealer should make a fair profit because they do need to make money for various reasons. But it's reading forums like this that help us determine what a "fair profit" is, because I've heard a lot of BS from different dealers about pricing. The first price I heard was MSRP - the $500 rebate.. yea right.

I'm kind of confused by how at first you are implying others are being greedy and wanting too good of a price, yet you brag that you got a better deal than most. Why not just post the price you paid and try to help others get a fair deal?

No where did I imply that other posters are greedy. The deals I get are based on the fact that I have purchased a number of vehicles from this family owned dealership and what I paid has absolutely no bearing on what the next guy pays at a mega dealership in a major metro area. There are regional rebates that are not available in all parts of the country at the same time. The only FAIR deal is one that both parties agree is fair.

Sorry, I read that wrong then. Sometimes it's easy to misread tones online..

I get what you're saying about incentives being different, but it's nice to be able to share numbers because there are a lot of sneaky dealers out there looking to get as much money as possible off you. I would be really upset if I hadn't done any research and paid full MSRP, then saw the prices others were able to get. Just yesterday I was told by a dealer "if you are a Chrysler Affiliate, the price will be the same no matter what dealer you go to", but I have received 4 different numbers from 4 different dealers. Hard to trust dealers.

The dealer I'm going to be buying through not only had the best deal that none of the others could touch, they also gave me the price with very little negotiating. You're lucky that you have a great local dealership. Hopefully I can say the same someday (this will be my first new Jeep).

what model were you getting? i got the overland. and the base for the overland was about 42. with everything that came on the jeep it came to 45. they told me about the lifetime warranty but recommended for me to not get it until the regular warranty passes. i ended up with a few years of manufacturers warranty and another one for free that covers dents, scratches, interior damage from spills of what ever and decoloring of leather, dash, trims, and everything. so when this passes i'll pay later of for the lifetime.

as for what i paid and how i did it, as per the talk about costs and what not in previous posts.

i actually didn't walk in there trying to cheat them out of money or short change them. i sat down and he asked so what are you looking to pay. i circled the msrp and told him, "i want to pay this out the door; fees, tax, and everything" said be right back, and came back saying ok you got a deal. maybe selling cars during a holiday weekend has its bonuses? i only found out later on cause it turns out my friend who came back knew the owner and thats how i found out i get it less then what he paid for.

Re: What should I pay???

To me the sales person is the enemy... the deal that finalizes means more money in my pocket or more money in thiers. They can bend someone else over but not this guy.

Re: What should I pay???

Be careful negotiating off of MSRP guys...and remember, the dealer is not your friend. Sure you can be amicable with them, but at the end of the day you have competing goals: to save and make money. No way around this dichotomy.

About MSRP negotiating. I had visited 4 Jeep dealers and contacted probably 10 others through email, and overall I was pleased by the sales support. Not overly pushy with just a few minor irritants here and there...but this one dealer took the cake. They mark up their jeeps by $5K (over sticker MSRP). The mark up actually showed up as a line item on the vehicle sticker. Apparently their sales manager/GM is a douche, even the sales guy helping us alluded to his off the wall tactics. They tried to get us to sign a credit app before talking price (said it was mandatory), to which I replied nope! Then there was the MSRP mark up which was a complete joke. It was funny because the MSRP of the vehicle I test drove was ~$40Kish and I saw that he had a starting price of $45K written down. As he sat down to talk to me, and after realizing I was an informed buyer, he scratched off the $45K and wrote in the $40K (he did this under the table). Of course this guy was the exception not the rule.

I'm sure no one on this forum would fall victim to these tactics, but it does underscore the importance of trying to negotiate the best deal possible. And if you're not the type to squeeze every penny out of the dealer, that's fine too. But if your goal is to get the best deal, do everything you can to get your target price. The dealer is working with perfect information (margin, cost, rebates, volume rebates) and he can walk away from the deal if it doesn't make sense...so don't feel bad.

Sorry I'll get off my soap box now. I'm taking a break at work and I'm a little hyper from too much coffee.
