What Size Drop For Hitch/Ball?

On my Tacoma, I used a 2" ball with 2" drop. I figure that was standard, so I bought that for the JGC too.

Today was my first time hitching up the Jeep and it's on the high side for my boat trailer. I believe I need either a 3" or 4" drop.

What do you guys have?

PS, towing the boat was a breeze. Only ~2000lbs. Didn't feel it back there at all while driving, EXCEPT for braking. There's definitely room for improvement in the braking department. This was with the V6 btw. I was also in Sport mode while in the "city". Once I got to open highway, I put it into Drive.

Re: What Size Drop For Hitch/Ball?

The drop you need will depend on your trailer tongue height , not what others use. Every vehicle/trailer combo is different. You need to get out a tape measure and just figure it out.

Re: What Size Drop For Hitch/Ball?

What kbre said...depends upon your trailer. In my case, both of my trailers (a smaller 2 horse bumper pull trailer and a 5'x8' utility trailer) have a similar hitch height for level which requires a 4" drop on my MY12 Summit. I have two ball mount/ball combinations, however, because the horse trailer requires a 2 5/16" ball and the utility trailer requires a 2" ball.

What size wheels are your trailers btw? I have 13" tires.

One positive thing about the current situation is. If there's any water in the boat, it comes out easily out the drain hole at the back.

But I'm pretty sure I need a 4" drop. Or maybe 6..... What exactly do you measure?

15" wheels on the horse trailer; not sure on the utility trailer.

To measure for the drop, have the trailer on a flat, level area and adjust the jack so that the trailer is sitting in proper orientation...level or ever so slightly nose up, never nose down. Measure from the ground up to the ball receiver to determine where the top of the ball needs to fall to hold the trailer in that orientation. Take that measurement and use it to determine what the drop needs to be on the ball mount to place the top of the ball at that same height. An inch taller is ok; never shorter. IE, too much drop is not a good thing.

Re: What Size Drop For Hitch/Ball?

I could use some help on this topic. Im renting a Uhaul 6'x12' enclosed trailer. I called them and they said so long as the hitch height is between 18"-25" I will be good to go.

I went out to my jeep and measured, the lowest point of the receiver is 18". Should I just buy a regular straight out receiver or should I get one that mounts higher?

This is what I use because I have a boat and an enclosed trailer that have different drops. Andersen Manufacturing, Inc. 3413 2" X 2 5/16" x 10" Aluminum Drop Rapid Hitch:Amazon:Automotive

It is possible to get a drop mount and install the ball upside down, giving you a ball that sits above your receiver height.

I myself have three different mounts with 3 different ball heights. I use what is appropriate for the tow vehicle (my truck or the jeep) and the trailer (I have a few, with differing heights).

You can also do what I am too cheap to do, which is get one of those nice adjustable height hitch mounts that costs $175-250. Never swap out a mount again.

According to your picture, your hitch height looks to be 20" so you should be fine! Remember, your measuring from the top of the sinside of the hitch, not the bottom.

Re: What Size Drop For Hitch/Ball?

I appreciate the help. I was able to purchase the correct receiver. Next step, loading up the uhaul and driving for 16 hours. Good thing my satellite radio is still active
