I've heard of people doing it, but I never really looked into it.
You can go to your local NAPA store and purchase a oil analysis kit for 20 or 25 dollars and it includes the fee to have it analyzed. You capture the oil as it comes out of the engine into a small plastic bottle seal it tape it fill out the form that comes with it and put it the envelope provided. I think I had to pay postage. In about 2 weeks you get results back.

There is a police supplement for the patrol cruisers and it actually indicates using 10w-30 is acceptable grade.

I have scene a couple of local cruisers at the Dodge store while visiting my pals who are techs and they had the top ends apart with bad cams, cruisers had 100k miles+ on em. The hemis were clean inside and I was told they ran LCD bulk 5w-20. So maybe in their application with tons of idling and pursuits, maybe a thicker oil would help the cam lobes.

Looking at the manual actually states 10w-30 mobil 1, this upfitters police manual is circa 2011.
