What type of oil?

I am planning to start doing my own oil changes from now on. What oil do you guys use or recommend for a '14 limited v6? I'm in PA so will probably stick with the recommended weight of 5W-20 for all seasons unless you guys think otherwise.

Re: What type of oil?

Depends on which engine & may be ok for PA but in Florida 10w-30 would be better for Dino.

I'd just go with what the manual says.

To be honest, modern oils are pretty adaptable and long lasting, so there's really not a real need for winter and summer weights like you had years ago. Even most dino oils have some synthetic ingredients along with friction reducers.

That's how I've done it for the last two vehicles and my truck I had before the Jeep lasted 17 years before I traded it in - and was still running great when I turned it off the last time.

Now, my 35 year old motorcycle I have to pay attention to the type and viscosity of the oil. It can't have friction reducers in it because it's a wet clutch lubricated by the engine oil. It also has to be a bit higher viscosity to avoid working past seals meant for 1980's dino oil from when it was built. The wrong type and it's like a dog marking its territory - or a Harley, whichever you prefer.

The important thing is you change it and the filter when your mileage and driving style dictates it.

Re: What type of oil?

I started using Mobil 1 many years ago in all of my engines including my lawn mowers. For the first time, I had the local oil change shop use their Pennzoil Premium synthetic 5w20 and their Pennzoil filter.

I changed my oil until a few years ago when I reached 70 years of age.

Is Mobil 1 Fiat/Chrsylers new oil standard certified yet?

Nope.

I use Castrol which does meet Spec and is widely available at places like Walmart.

You can see it meets spec on Page 2 under 5W-20. It does not show it on the bottle any more. It used to, but they ran out of room I guess.

I believe Shell has similar.

I did several oil analysis at 7500 mile intervals and it all looked good.

Re: What type of oil?

I switched to synthetic as well and use Castrol Edge Synthetic 5W30. Mobil 1 was not in the approved list so I did not want to risk my extended warranty. So, went with an oil brand that is on the approved list.

I also send my used oil out for analysis (Blackstone) and save the report with the receipts and other service records.

Cheers,
-A

How much does that cost?

I've heard of people doing it, but I never really looked into it.

Re: What type of oil?

Just about any 5w-20 meeting MS6395 spec should work.

I have a stash of Valvoline synpower, QS Ult durability, Royal Purple, QS Tq Pwr,
I got on sale or clearance.

Might get some amsoil 0w-20 next time I order.

I'm wondering why you would consider going with what a bunch of random / anonymous guys on a forum would use over what the manual says. My advice - don't complicate things that don't need to be complicated. Use what's recommended in the manual.
