When does the gas light come on?

In my WJ the gas light come on when there is about 2 gallons left in the tank. It's a 20.5 gallon tank when the light comes on I usually need to put about 18.5 in to fill it up.

Just curious how the WK2 is programmed. Anyone have any experience with it?

I hope to not experience it anytime soon, its not too good to let your vehicle run low, let alone enough for the gas light to come for any engine, let alone a brand new engine! lol

Even with all the filtration I suppose the best time to try it would be the first couple of fill ups, before the tank starts to accumulate debris on the bottom, hehe

Re: When does the gas light come on?

On my WJ, the light is very conservative, and I've driven more than 40 miles before filling up, and still had about a gallon left. I would imagine this is something similar, although the 2 gallon spec may be off.

Re: When does the gas light come on?

the DTE in the cluster stops counting at 30 miles til empty. then it just says low fuel. light goes on around a lil less than 1/8 tank.

Re: When does the gas light come on?

Is it really a bad idea to run your tank down to only 2 gallons left? I've never heard this before. Whats the best time to fill up at half a tank left a quarter tank left? I never even considered letting my tank go empty to be a bad thing.

I assumed the gas was taken from the bottom of the tank so if there was debris it would get sucked in full or empty. Or are gas tanks some sort of bladder system.

I know in my GMC sierra you should never run it down. Once you get past the 1/4 tank mark you can start to hear the pump working and the lower it gets the louder it gets. MAtter a fact 3 years ago when gas hit the $5 mark more people were running their tanks down to empty and shops started to see a drastic increase in full pump replacements. Just saying, filler up at a 1/4 and you will not be spending anymore and taking less risk of repairs.

Re: When does the gas light come on?

I'll start by saying I agree with everyone else that said you shouldn't run down below a quarter tank, in addition to being bad for the fuel pump if you live in a area that gets cold in the winter the more air space in the tank the more condensation will form during temprature changes. During the Chicagoland winters I usually try not to go below a half tank.

That said, I also believe in knowing what your ranges and limitations are. I always run a vehical down fairly low right when I get it. No much chance in doing harm in the frst few weeks. So, the light came on when the evic said around 30 miles left like a previous post said. That was a little on the safe side though. I ran another 15 miles or so before I filled up and the tank took about 22 and change. I figured the light hit at about 3or 3.5 gallons left and I figured a range of about 40 miles (5.7)at the light.

Now that I know this I will never left it intentionally get that low again, but if I'm in a sh!tty nieghborhood downtown and the light comes on at least I'll know if I can make it to a safer gas station.

The manual states that the fuel light will come on with approximately 3 gallons left.

Re: When does the gas light come on?

My KJ's light fluctuates and seems to come on when the EVIC thinks there's one gallon left. e.g., of the EVIC currently shows 18 MPG, then the light comes on at the same time the EVIC says I have 18 miles to left. (The EVIC has a screen showing how many miles I supposedly have left for the current amount of gas in the tank.)

Re: When does the gas light come on?

Most fuel pump modules and hanger units utilize the fuel for cooling. Run the level too low and the pump may indeed overheat and suck up the concentration of contamination in the bottom of the tank. The strainer can only absorb so much crud.
