Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

Other than not wanting to disclose how much I make and how much I spent on the car, I'll admit that the main reason is that, I'm embarrassed to say since I'm such a lousy negotiator, that I don't want to hear "you paid HOW MUCH? Well, you could have gotten it for $XXXXX amount. I got it (or I know a guy who could have gotten it for you) for $10,000 cheaper using this club number that anyone can get by just signing up AND the dealer threw in chrome tow hooks, an overhead rack, and 5 years worth of free oil changes and tire rotations. You mean you didn't get that too?!!!" See, I feel bad already.

Typically, it's to keep from causing issues within the ranks of co-workers. There is no better way to reduce morale for people than to let them know that the guy who is a year newer than them, doesn't do as good of a job as them, etc. makes a decent amount more than them.

Some people are also asshats, and will flat out make up numbers. I know a guy at work who claimed to make starting out more than people who had that job 5 years ago, and now were a few rungs up from him. Nobody believed him, but still, it affects morale.

Most employers have rules saying that you're not allowed to talk about pay, whether or not that is enforceable is another matter.

I say no. My salary isn't available online, but the price of the vehicle I drive is. If I see someone driving a '13 GT500, I know they make good money, I don't have to ask. Same goes for a $50k Grand Cherokee. They must be doing ok salary wise to be owning one. Most people with common sense can figure that out. I don't need to know what someone's salary is, and people don't need to know mine. If someone asks me a question about my vehicle, odds are, it's because they are interested in it, not my job. Though I have no problem telling people what I do for a living if they ask.

Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

Another thing i'll add - why people are asking will also depend on location and age.

Where I grew up in South Florida, it wasn't uncommon for 16 year old's first cars to be things like my Overland. It wasn't uncommon to see young professionals in brand new Lexus, BMWs, Range Rovers, etc. In many companies, it was expected for the young professionals to go out and buy a entry level luxury car actually.

Where I live now, not so much. In NC, for a younger person to be driving a newer, nicer looking vehicle it takes on a level of skepticism. I've had people ask me stupid things like "Wow, where did you rent a vehicle as nice as that?", some people assume it's borrowed from a parent, etc.

To me, it's just a Jeep. It's a nice vehicle that I like a lot, and I don't want people to ding it up, but it's nothing amazing. It's not a million dollar Veyron, it's not an original Shelby Cobra, it's just another vehicle that is a step up from basic transportation. Apparently, a lot of people don't see it that way and think it's more of a big deal than I do. I can't really think of a car as a "big deal" until it's over 100k.

Mine has my name on it so noone can doubt it's mine.

I guess I understand the workplace pay difference argument. Never thought of that as we just get paid according to how many years at each rank. The only difference is overtime and if you turn down callouts you can't complain when you get less money.

I say "too much" sometimes, or "around 60k". Going rate for a Limited here is about 57k and I added QuadraLift and the panoramic sunroof, which is how I ended up at 60. Import and tax are killers. Had to dodgy it up a bit to avoid paying Luxury Car Tax as well.

Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

haha love the $/lb amazing. But i tell people how much i really got mine for, i get asked all the time since I'm young (22), i have a blast telling people the awesome deal I got on mine. Its more fun when I go to fuel up our demo cars and people ask me how much that car cost. I usually say if you need to ask, it doesnt matter haha (Ferrari's). For those interested the $/lb on our new demo FF is $108/lb haha

I say no as well, for the same reason. Lots of people have my vehicle or will buy one but no one else has my job or will have it.

I will tell people how much my car was and other material things whenever asked. I have told people my salary in the past during certain situations, it's not that big of a deal IMO. I don't like current coworkers knowing but that's about it.

The amount of toys and stupid shit I buy kinda gives it away anyway.

Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

I tell people. Doesn't matter to me. My salary is public so they can find that out if they want to anyway. I usually say Msrp was 43k, paid 37,700.. They all know I am into my vehicles and don't mind spending money to get what I want..
