However, people like to hear numbers, but I normally don't give it up.

How do you feel when people ask you "how much did you pay?"
Fun question!
I say $51000 for my Laredo and then ask them if they can think of any better value (and they can't here in Australia).

I get excited cause it is a tremendous vehicle and a great value! And I mention that a Mercedes ML or a Range Rover Sport cost $25K more and you get less. That helps give some context about the class of vehicle. But a fully loaded Overland is not inexpensive. But if you amortize it over 15 years it's a good deal.

Sadly it's probably not the same guy. He's not the type to go to South Beach. More of a Mizner Park sort of guy. There's plenty of people like him though.

Guys like that are a big part of the reason we all drive SUVs and trucks in my family. They're not as bad as the trophy wife on the phone in the Escalades though, those are totally unpredictable. At least the egomaniacs you can expect what they'll do.

Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

I tell them that it was worth every penny that I paid.

Honestly, I can't remember exactly what I paid. But try to ballpark it. I understand the curiosity. I'm guilty of asking the same thing on occasion. Honestly, when I have asked someone what something costs (car, or whatever), it is to satisfy my own curiosity. I really don't have an agenda except to know what something costs because it might be something I might be interested in purchasing. By asking someone, it gives me a good frame of reference and starting point for real world purchases instead of a standard msrp.

Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

I was asked, "that those models must be over $50k" (here in Canada), and I said yeah, $54k, but it was a Demo with 5000 miles, and got 25% off. Didn't tell him my trade was paid for and worth $20k on trade as never asked anymore questions. People think that is too much for a vehicle, but if your kids are through university, mortgage is paid, retirement being saved, then what the hell, you're only here for a short time.

Re: When people ask you the price you paid how do you react?

I just say "A helluva lot less than I paid for my Mercedes and Range Rover...and the service department is where you save the real money when compared to those two..." Usually shuts 'em up!

His rationale? "I have enough money, I basically just pay for the right to run them when they mail me tickets or my attorney makes them go away". So if you're ever near Boca Raton and see some sort of luxury car (he traded his Bentley on a Rolls Royce last I heard) coming up to a red light, you'd probably best double check that they do in fact stop.
If I were lucky enough to be there during that situation I would hit the gas first then the brakes ensuring he hit me ...then I would have a brand new overland or altitude...

I think if you got hit by a Rolls you might end up in a box. Those things are tanks.
