Which WK2 to avoid if any? heard rumors...

Hello everyone,

I am sure I will eventually be a avid member of your forum once I purchase my Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have been doing some research and I figure the best people to ask questions to are the owners who currently have a Wk2. I'll use your answers and purchase my jeep within the next month or so.

I am looking at the 5.7 Hemi between within the years of 2012 and 2014. I know that there was a update between 13-14 which included the 8 speed transmission a facelift as well as the interior adjustments.

That being said I have read online that the 2014 8-speed transmissions are a horror to have and they come with a bunch of electrical problems.

I have also heard the 2012-2013 5.7 Hemi was a decent model besides the fish bite issue that some owners are running into.

This all being said please guide me in the correct direction. Thanks you in advance.

Re: Which WK2 to avoid if any? heard rumors...

If you are looking at the 5.7 then transmission issues are NOT applicable. The 8spd transmission in the 2014+ V8 has been pretty solid and I honestly do not recall hearing about any issues on this forum.
If I had to choose any model to avoid I guess it would be any very early built 2014 (either engine)...like the ones built in 2013. It seems those guys had the most gremlins and those mainly being electrical issues here and there. Obviously some guys with early built 2014 have great cars, but I'm just saying if I had to pick one model to avoid it would be a 2013 built 2014. Not only for that reason, but I think some early built 2014s dont have the newer updated start/stop adaptive cruise, or the auto lowering suspension. If you aren't even considering the V6 then I wont get into the transmission issues, but in a nut shell it was the V6 models that suffered from that issue, not the V8!
Besides that they seem to be pretty solid. No major 5.7 V8 issues as that engine has been around and proven, tranny is solid, maybe some minor electrical things here and there, but not bad.

Now since you are considering the 2011-2013 style and 2014 I will say this..having had both. The updates/improvements/changes to the 2014 model is BIG. Even though the earlier vehicles are no doubt great vehicles, the 2014 models almost make them seem like an older generation. Uconnect 8.4" and the 8spd are amazing! The updated front and rear end, interior, everything. So that is my word of advice. Get a 2014 or later built 2014 V8 and you will be HAPPY!! I promise! Then just do all the other usual used car stuff. Least amount of owners is usually always a good thing, no reported accidents. Look to see if it has all original paint so you know its never had any work. If you don't know how to tell have a dealer measure the paint. Clear coat texture is a dead give away though. Should look like an orange peel throughout and be perfectly consistent. Don't settle for anything less than what you really want. You often hear of guys buying something, then wishing they had the advanced technology package or a different engine etc etc. Figure out exactly what you want and stick to it. There is no shortage of Grand Cherokees out there.
Take it for a good test drive, even ask the dealer if they do extended test drives so you can keep it over night or for atleast a few hours. Any dealer that does this usually wins my business. Some will say no because of insurance reasons or some other BS.

Hey! thanks for the quick reply... okay so summary is just get a 2014 v8 . Ill be purchasing one with less then 40,000 miles and I should have it within a month or so. I have found a couple i just wanted to make sure they are worth the extra 5 grand compared to the 2013 models.

I am looking forward to this vehicle. Nothing else on the road really gets my attention anymore.

Yes I think that would be great. To find the build date just open the driver door and there is a sticker in the jam somewhere and there will be the MFR Date. Like I said the only one I would probably pass on would be a 2014 model year with a MFR date in 2013. Even those might have all the gremlins worked out by now, but I personally would prefer a used vehicle that hasn't been to the dealer several times.
I'm sure you already did your home work, but the different models available in 2014 are Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit, SRT.
Summit comes fully loaded all options and then some. Higher quality leather and more of it, adaptive headlights, suede like headliner and front pillars, different interior colors, and different exterior styling.
Overland can come equipped almost as good as Summit, but some things are optional such as advanced technology group which includes a bunch of cool things. No nicer headliner or adaptive headlights, or front park sensors available on Overland. Still an extremely nice vehicle!
All my opinion, but I would go Overland or Summit for most bang for the buck. 2015 added the High Altitude model which is a sportier looking Summit/Overland combination.

Get the LATEST VIN# / date you can. I was a July 2013 buyer of a 2014 model and it was the worst car experience of my life.

My vehicle was bought back by Chrysler. A few months later, I happened to notice it was still in the Jeep Owners database in my account. It had already been re-sold and had already been back in the shop for yet another electrical issue. It was probably given the "all clear" by Chrysler, just like my dealer had given me the "all clear" several times, and yet back to the service department I'd go.

Be very careful. Get a one-owner with MORE miles than you're comfortable with. That's what I do when I buy Jeeps. That way I figure the person who had it before me was happy with it and put lots of miles on it.

There are a lot of Jeeps out there that have been through a few owners with as many miles on them as you're looking at. Stay away from those.

Good luck! We just picked up a 2016 and so far, well, knock on wood and all that.

Yep, look for builds after September 2013. Issues were far more common with MY14 builds earlier than this. The 8 speed transmission in the v8 is a ZF 8HP70 designed for higher torque input than the one on the v6. The one on the v6 is 845RE, built by chrysler, and tweaked for economy, it has had a few issues with rough low gear changes. But hearing less complaints about that now.

As stated earlier, the ZF 8 speed in the V8 is the German built version used on many high end vehicles and had relatively few issues. The one used in the V6 is built by Chrysler and unfortunately had more than its share of issues. Mine was built Labor Day weekend in 2013 and has been flawless.

Re: Which WK2 to avoid if any? heard rumors...

I've got a 2012 Overland V8 and have put 112,000 miles on it. It runs better than the day I got it (don't know if it takes 100,000 miles to break in or if some software update along the way is the cause ) and it's been almost completely trouble-free. I had a sunroof air leak when I first got it; that was solved by a simple adjustment. And, I had a brake booster go bad somewhere north of 40,000 miles; this turned out to be a recurring problem that was later the subject of a recall campaign. Apart from that, it's all been just routine maintenance--fluid changes, filters, and spark plugs.

I don't have any experience with the later, updated model years, but I'd imagine that you'll be fine with any of them. I'd note that the nav system in the 2012 is pretty rudimentary, but I almost always use Waze instead of it due to the continuous updates and the traffic alert feature. My gas mileage runs in the 17.5 - 17.9 mpg range most of the year (I do a fair amount of highway driving and, hypothethically speaking, might average 78-80 mph on interstates), with the mileage dropping a couple of mpg in the winter with our crappy reformulated gas. I think that an 8-speed would offer a bit of improvement in gas consumption and performance.

So, I'm sure that the later models would be very nice. However, speaking from the perspective of a 2012 owner, it's a been a spectacularly good vehicle--comfortable, reliable, and a reasonably good performer. If you're looking at a 2013-2014, you might be well advised to focus on one that was produced later in the cycle, as there were some teething pains early on, but I wouldn't shy away from a 2012 if the price is attractive.

Re: Which WK2 to avoid if any? heard rumors...

I've had a 2012 V6, a 2014 V6 (build date Feb. 2013) and now a 2016 V8. Personally, I'd avoid anything before a 2014 - the transmission alone is worth it. My V6 with the 5 speed was a dog compared to the 8 speed. That said - I had a very, very early build 2014 and never a hiccup with the transmission. Only electrical gremlin I had was it ate sunroof controllers and motors for breakfast - 4th set was the charm.

My '16 with the Hemi is the best of them all though!

Re: Which WK2 to avoid if any? heard rumors...

I have a 2013 V8 Laredo X with the 20in wheels and Nav.
It has everything I need, leather, back up cam, bluetooth, Auto climate control, I have also added the Borla exhaust and a hitch.
Had it in for 2 TSB's
The oil pan was updated, can't remember the TSB # off hand
(Then I bought the new dipstick after finding out that was the real problem.)
And a re-flash for the "Fish bite" shifting.

Other than that, the only times it has been to the dealer is for recalls. (Fuel pump relay, Sunvisor wiring)
Personally I am extremely happy with my WK2, it has been a very reliable vehicle and for the difference in price to upgrade, I'll be keeping this one.

Also, 2013 was the last year for the flip up back window
