Re: Who changes your oil?

I take mine to the dealer. I paid $70 for 4 oil changes the last time I went. Synthetic is a waste IMO unless you like to leave oil in there for 4 years without changing it.

Re: Who changes your oil?

Changed mine this morning in the driveway. Took less time then going to dealer.

Thumbs down Re: Who changes your oil?

Took it to dealer today. Came back with hood not latched and change oil light not turned off. I just hope they didn't forget to put the oil in. Glad i caught the hood before i ended up with my hood in the windshield

hehehehehe - What will synthetic give you over dino oil for the average owner? 10K-15K miles/year and keeping the vehicle for 4-5 years. That is pretty normal. No extreme driving or offroading, just street use. As long as you change the oil at recommended intervals, synthetic will only give you a lighter wallet.

Its a Jeep, towing and offroading is why you buy a jeep.

Longer oil change intervals. Change the bulk dino oil at 8k and run an oil analysis on it, I'd bet its no longer protecting as a synthetic would. Dino should be 3-5k, synthetic can do 5-8k safely, or more (1 yr of driving) dependent on which you choose.

I do a Blackstone analysis every time. My Amsoil with 10k intervals shows almost no breakdown, try that with Dino. I accredit this to great synthetic oil, clean air filter and doing it myself and knowing its done right.

That's not being questioned. The question is more about what is the benefit if you're only going to own the vehicle for 4-5 years.

If a modern engine needs synthetic to make it to a lousy 5th birthday and, say, 60K miles, then what hope is there for civilization?

Re: Who changes your oil?

The less time my vehicles spend with the "pros" the better. Thanks, but I'll go out of my way to do work myself. It's not even really about the money, it's about knowing it's done right and not overpaying for something simple. If Jiffy Pube is going to hire a 17 year old kid to do a blood transfusion in a $50k vehicle, I'll gladly take the 30 minutes out of my day to do it myself, when it's convenient for me. This is not at all a hassle because I also shop for my oil changes well in advance. I pass by an auto parts store at least 1 or 2 a month on just routine stuff, so I stop and stock up on what I need for the next service. Waste oil is collected in a 3 gal container and once that fills up, I take it to WallyWorld which is a mile up the road and have it emptied. Oil filter gets drained during the oil change and tossed in the trash. Being under there is the perfect time to look around, make sure there arent' any leaks or other issues. This isnt' hard or time consuming stuff folks...

And I use synthetic, because I run my vehicles well past 100k and because it's better than dino in every possible way.

Its cheaper to run synthetic such as mobil 1 from walmart for only 30 bucks or Pennzoil Platinum for even less. That would be a benefit. Less synthetic changes, means less oil and less oil filters. Over the 5 year period that would be money saved else you get free dino changes at the dealer.

The best oil/filter deal for dino is usually around 20 bucks from a nationwide autoparts place for a name brand.
