Why $1000 extra for brushed trim in the California edition.

So they give you the same parts with a different finish, charge a thousand dollars and call it California Edition????

Unless there is something I am missing, I don't get the audacity of charging this much money for the changes in the appearance. If they sold last year with the satin finish then maybe one of the marketing geeks would have suggested they sell a Tuxedo edition with chrome instead of the satin finish and charge $1000 for it.

Am I missing something here? Is there any added value to the difference in the parts? Don't get me wrong, I am not making any "value" judgements on anyone's personal preference, but don't see $1000 in "value" in changing out the parts from shiny to brushed or in the case of the door handles and mirrors from shiny to painted.

I haven't seen the California edition in person, but it looks good, just think I would feel taken for a ride if I paid an extra thousand for the look.

Also, why "California." Is this an inside joke that I am not privy to?

Paul

They do it because they can.
For some folks it is well worth it, for others it isn't. To each his own.

I suppose "California Edition" has somewhat more marketing cachet than, say, "Ohio Edition"

About half of that is because they can--pure profit. The other half is increased parts cost of those particular parts due to lower volume on them, as well as recouping tooling changes for the different finish. The supplier will charge more as they will have to have a different finish process.

Re: Why $1000 extra for brushed trim in the California edition.

Getting a Summit with lower body panels in a different color simply didn't work for me. Without the Cali-package, I would have been bound to a grey Summit and - to somehow match the interior to that - a black interior. As an alternative, my dealer would have had to paint all the parts although I'm not sure if that was even possible on a lease in the first place.

So for a factory-option, they certainly make a healthy profit - but since I'm leasing, I'm only paying less than $500.

Somehow, I'm having my doubts that my dealer would have been able to paint the entire lower panels, the mirror-housings and door-handles for less, so I'm OK with that.

After all, it's an option so everybody can decide if it's what they want or not and if it's worth it. In my case, I was happy about this offer because I had far more color-choices.

BTW, I don't care about the brushed trim or wheels at all. The standard chrome would have been fine as well.

Re: Why $1000 extra for brushed trim in the California edition.

I think the "justification" for the price is like this.... it comes in chrome, if you wanted to change it out it would cost you $$$$$ and huge hassle, we'll do it for you at the factory for only $$$ in an X Edition. That X Edition trim pricing has been going on forever (see Wranglers too). I agree though, $1K for the difference is high...very high in my book.

Re: Why $1000 extra for brushed trim in the California edition.

It's nice it's offered. I think Jeep should offer to get color matched mirros and handles on the Overland too for like $350 or something. Or an Altitude look on Overland models.
