Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

..first post here.
Owned 4runner Sport V8 for about 8 years. Wanted to replace with other midsize SUV with V8. Not much choice on a market. Only two other were Lexus GX460 or Land Rover.
Both out of the question. Lexus is larger and not a good deal for the money. Old V8 and that fugly nose... and on top of that not much "offroadiness". Land Rover.. you know.
I picked up MY'13 Overland with Hemi, and got Max Care. Only driven about 600 miles. So far so good. Features I got in GC vs Lexus and even LR, no context for the money (as long as it works of course).

Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

I am recently new to Jeep as well (2 weeks). I was looking for a mid-sized SUV that could tow ~6000 lbs. (I was coming from a full sized SUV but was done with that)

I was basically looking at Durango, GC, and Touareg. The only other things that could tow that much in the size I wanted were the luxury brands (Audi, MB, Lexus) and it was just too much money.

Did not like the look and feel of the Durango so it was quickly eliminated. There were a few things I liked better about the Jeep (mainly air suspension, also remote start) and a few I liked better about the VW (nav, handling, feel of the build quality and the diesel). I probably would have gone with the VW if it wasn't for the diesel stop sale and no end in sight to their issues.

The gas VW was a too gutless so I ended up with a 2016 Grand Cherokee High Altitude with the V8 in billet. Enjoying it so far. Tinted the windows and had expel put on the front and brake controller installed already. Planning on picking up the trailer this weekend to see how it tows.

I wanted another GC due to it being a work horse, my first 2 didn't die on me! Why not get a 3rd.

Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

I have an 18 foot boat that I pull so that was the first part of the puzzle. I needed a V8 and most SUV donít offer it until you get up into Yukon territory. And those things are way to big for my needs.
Itís my daily driver as well.
Had a Lexus GX470 and considered another because it was super reliable. But hated the interior and styling of the newer ones. Considered the Explorer but I would never use the 3rd row seat and as much as I love the extra cargo space I just couldnít get comfortable when I test drove one. Ford Sync.. ugh

Came across the GC when I saw a picture of the 2014 front end. Loved it. And the more I read about it the more impressed I was.

50K and runs great

Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

Just to add on to my prior post, the biggest thing for me is reliability then cost to own then looks then fit and finish.I score my Jeeps 10 on each.Just a damn fine vehicle.Hell,my old '90 Wrangler(owned from new)has over 200,000 miles and STILL never fails me.(sorry to all those who have already heard the tale of my Wrangler!!),longevity for a Jeep is,to me,an expected part of the purchase.
Don't know what my Wrangler is worth now,but after 4 years of finance, the last 22 years after that has way covered its initial purchase price, and I expect my Grand's to give me the same return.I Beleive in the build quality that much.
After all,a vehicle is the largest $$$ amount you will ever spend, second only to your home.So why just buy for looks if the bones aren't good to start with?
I got all the luxury and style I want and am VERY happy with the Jeep marque.

Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

I've had many vehicles. This version of the GC always catches my eye. I most recently had 2 Wranglers and wanted something that I wouldn't modify and something very comfortable. My 4X4 HA is the nicest vehicle I have ever driven and is still pretty fun with a Hemi. I will be taking some long trips in the next few years and a Rubicon on 37's was not what I wanted to do it in.

Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

My wife was involved in an accident that totaled her 2015 Honda Pilot. We (mostly me!) decided to look at all the options in the same "basic" category as replacement for the lost Pilot. I did most of the research. I knew she was leaning towards the new upgraded 2016 Honda Pilot, but I wanted to give her a few more options to consider. The Jeep Grand Cherokee was one of the 4 (GC, Pilot, Highlander, and Pathfinder) we considered. She ended up choosing the Pilot because she loved her 2015 and it had the 3rd row seating. I have to admit it is a great vehicle! HOWEVER, I couldn't stop looking at the GC. I purchased a brand new 1997 GC 4x4 and kept it for several years before starting a LONG RUN of Silverado Crew Cab 4x4s (3 total) up until this recent purchase. I ended up stopping by the Jeep dealership to "just look" at a GC. That was last Friday at lunch. By noon on Saturday I was a new Jeep Grand Cherokee owner.

So far .... So GOOD!!

I originally went to the dealership because a friend that was car-less at the time due to engine failure needed a ride.

I had planned on buying a few months later, but was able to work out a great deal that day and pulled the trigger then.

So, my friend bought a Jeep and so did I. The sales guy got two sales at once, which made him happy to deal.

Re: Why did you choose Grand Cherokee

This is my first Jeep. Traded in my Dodge Journey R/T which served me and my family well for over 5 years.

Before the Dodge and the arrival of my first kid, I had an Audi that was my baby. It was a love-hate relationship that was a money pit in both parts upgrade as well as constant repairs.

When I had my kid, we decided we needed a regular "family" car that wasn't burning a hole in our pockets. So I traded the Audi. Every time I drove the Dodge, I felt like I compromised a lot from the Audi.

Fell in love with the Jeep GC, but every time I ran the numbers we knew we couldn't afford it.

My budget was around $50K give or take so we were looking at the 2016 Honda Pilot Touring (Canadian Elite model) which had all the options. I put a reservation with the dealer and waited for weeks.

In the meantime I couldn't get over the JGC and was searching for used 2015 models and fell in love with the High Altitude Overland model with Eco Diesel. Found one that was 5 months old and with just 6K KM. Spoke to the dealer and put a reservation on it over the phone so I can inspect in person while we negotiate the price.

Over the weekend, checked and the exterior was flawless. No scratches on the paint or wheels. The only blemish was the clear film paint protection on the lower rear door which was bubbling. I pointed it out to the dealer and they will be fixing it per our agreement.

Brand spanking new 2016 Honda Pilot Elite/Touring with all the bells and whistles versus used 2015 JGC HA? To my wife it was a big trade-off. She was at first shaking her head over buying used. To her if I can't afford a vehicle brand new, I shouldn't be forcing to buy if it's out of my financial league.

Of course she made sense, but driving the JGC is a different beast. Brought back memories of when I was driving the Audi. It was sure-footed. It had command of the road versus the Dodge which felt like it was passive.

More importantly despite being big and heavy, it had awesome fuel economy and power with lag (just like my old Audi. LOL).

Hoping this decision will serve me well or I will be getting the "i told you so".
