Why did you factory order your JGC?

Hi Everyone,

Today makes it 8 weeks since I ordered my Jeep and, although it's making progress, it still isn't parked in my garage. Here's my current state of affairs:

Plant Release (KZ) 05/09/2014 11:34 AM EDT Detroit Jefferson Assembly, MI
Adv Ship Notice to Dest Ramp 05/09/2014 11:34 AM EDT Avi - Vls West Road Yard, MI
Paper Receipt 05/09/2014 12:43 PM EDT Avi - Vls West Road Yard, MI

In the last 8 weeks I've asked myself many times why I didn't just find one on a lot somewhere instead of ordering. Here are my answers to that:
1. I wanted a late build date.
2. I live in a state that doesn't require a front license plate and every time we found the interior/exterior combo I wanted the dealer already had a plate on the front.
3. I finally found what I wanted without the front plate a few hours away, but it had the CD player. I have no use for a CD player, I don't like that it's in the center console, and I didn't want to pay even a little extra for a feature I didn't want.

So, those are my three flimsy reasons for placing a factory order.

Anyone else willing to share the reasons you ordered instead of taking one off the lot? Come on, give me something to read to help pass the time while waiting on my Jeep. :)

Thanks

I have been waiting for the TH2, but think that will not appear until Jeep puts a diesel in the Laredo. After seeing what Jeep did with the Altitude package waiting for the TH2 is less enticing. So I will build my own TH2.

Ordering a Overland Granite, Indigo Blue, Diesel, ORAII, Engine Block Heater, without the Advance Tech package (ADG). This combo is not on dealer lots and you can get the diesel without ADG.
Don't need an expensive sensor right in front. Also, not sure how I will address the front air-dam problem and do not want to limit my options by having the front sensor to consider. No DVD as well, waste of valuable space.

Plan for Mopar Rock Rails, off road tires, Garvin Roof rack, Hi-lift jack, winch, on board air, mud floor liners ...

While I didn't not order my present JGC, I believe I would seriously consider it in the future...to insure that it's exactly how I want it; to avoid dealer trades that result in holes in my front bumper (!) and to take advantage of much better pricing that could come from a group-buy somewhere. I have little loyalty to the local dealer and they certainly don't favor outstanding pricing, either...

I ordered mine because they weren't building them yet, making it difficult to buy off the lot. :)

I have no preference. I have ordered and bought off the lot with equal success. I have always been lucky ordering GM and Ford products. I never waited more than 5 or 6 weeks.

I ordered mine because I was tired of compromising for the config that the dealers happen to have in stock. I wanted a diesel Limited or Overland with ORA2 and tech group in Granite/Lt Frost beige. Looked locally for six weeks, nada. One dealer finally found one in Vegas but it also had that atrocious center-console-wasting cd player. Seriously, could they have found a larger CD player to put in there?? It looks like it's from the 90s. Anyway since it was a dealer trade I couldn't get a great price on it.

Finally decided to take the plunge and fly all the way to Texas to buy a car. Everybody I tell this to thinks I'm nuts, but I'm so excited that I got exactly what I want for a great price, even after factoring in flight/hotel/shipping the car back to CA.

Ordered mine two weeks ago. Didn't want to get the luxury II, or more specifically did not want to get the panoramic sunroof, or any sunroof for that matter. Limited, EcoDiesel, body colored mirrors, trailer tow, fold flat front passenger seat, ORA I, Nav.

Might be out of the loop a bit, but are you sure you're getting a fold flat front seat with a Limited?

To the OP: biggest factor was the lack of hassle (DC group buy). everything was done over the internet. Next, I built it the way I wanted it ...No Lux, No 20" ( which was hard to find here in North Carolina)

Yea, sunroofs pretty much.

Here is So Cal, everything has a sunroof.

Also, they didn't have any of the green ones. There were very few green at ALL, in the STATE, much less in my configuration.

We ordered my wife's Ford Fusion, that was basically painless. That was funny, couldn't find that car anywhere either, of course (well, unless you wanted leather and a sunroof...). But a month or so after we got it, we found it's clone in a parking lot.

I'm patient enough to wait, get what I want. Dealers like to gee gaw the cars up more than I like.

You are spot on.

You get the later build date which I think is important for various reasons. Why not get a freshly built GC that no on else has been driving....even test driving? You get exactly what you want without paying for things you don't want.

I was in the same boat with a dealership who was getting close on price but it had the CD player (waste of money, waste of space). I did a couple of weeks of looking and seeing if dealers could order/price match etc. etc. etc. In hindsight, I should just saved those two weeks and ordered right away via the DC buyers group.

Ordering is pretty much the way to go, at least in South Florida, if you want a 4x4 as the 4x4's are slim pickings especially when you know exactly what you want.

Looks like you got a good week...maybe two....until delivery. It is worth the wait!

There were none on the lots when I ordered mine - in fact, mine was one of the first '14s to arrive at the very large dealership in Houston where I ordered it. I too didn't want a sunroof; live in a state that doesn't require front plates; and I just like ordering my new vehicles when possible to get the exact combination of options that I want. From order date to delivery of mine took 24 days.

Ordering a Overland blk/blk with tech pkg, V6, 4WD and rear entertainment. I can't find one within 1000 miles on a lot. After reading on this forum I am very glad I am ordering a later build date based on the bugs in the earlier ones. Previous owner of Infiniti G37S and Honda Pilot. Now have an Audi S5 and a new Jeep on the way! I sure hope the quality and reliability are there for Detroit's sake.

Factory ordered for a few reasons.

1) I'm OCD and didn't want the dealer to "prep" the vehicle took delivery with plastics still on it
2) didn't want the sunroof and 99% of the ones on the lots had them
3) wanted to have my name on the window sticker (stupid reason but kind of cool)
4) wasn't in a hurry and knew that that way no one would of been test driving it and hooning on it while it was cold.

Ordered mine because I want my $45K vehicle to be EXACTLY in the colors and with or without the options I want or don't want. No sunroof and V8/Quadradrive in the Limited trim was impossible to find. I've always had to order my vehicles - so much fun tracking them and in the case of the Z06, taking delivery at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY

I ordered mine from the factory because, like Dan JGC, there were no 4X4s in south Texas either, in the color I wanted with the equipment I wanted. One dealer found one that was close to what I wanted (plus an unwanted chrome step rail package which I sure don't need and some other chrome doo-dahs) many hundreds of miles away and wanted an extra grand to have it brought here. Not the deal for me.

I went to a different dealer who was more than happy to order the exact JGC I wanted for a price under what TrueCar listed as a very good deal and in less than 6 weeks I had my car. I tracked it through production and delivery. I know what day it was painted, when it was assembled, when it passed inspection and sent to be delivered. No one test drove it, it didn't sit on the lot and like someone else said it had my name on the factory window sticker. As a bonus, it has been absolutely trouble-free, but that's probably a coincidence. :D

Anyhow, I am happy knowing I got everything I wanted and didn't get stuck with things I didn't want. The wait is worth it. Hang in there and enjoy your new Jeep!

Had dealer locate a late (enough) build and ship it in and then I rejected it! Oops! Had to, HUGE paint run on hood and I keep my rigs til dead and no way was I going to let them bust into factory paint and clear coat on the hood that will get punished on Cleveland roads. Decided to let them sell it to someone who didn't care and I ordered it thru the Houston Group Buy. Planned on making the pickup a mini vacation with my 18 yr old son who is going to UT-Austin this fall but my 3rd leg surgery intervened so I paid $600 to have it trucked up on auto-carrier semi.

Happy!

Life happened so my plans got delayed, but I was considering a factory order. I wanted a multipurpose vehicle for some rough roads that's also a comfortable daily driver for my long highway commute. I think the local dealers mostly order them optioned as luxury family trucksters for soccer practice and shopping trips. They always add a sunroof I don't want, often add the 20-inch wheels I'd rather not have, never add the ORA2 or Quadra-Drive I do want, etc.

^^^^^^^

That looks like it musta hurt!!! Just be glad there was no CV boot clamp in there...we know what a problem those can be! ;)

Speaking of window stickers (and the thread about if you got a full tank of gas on delivery). The South Florida dealership that I ordered my 2011 from didn't fill up the tank, spelled Donald on the window sticker instead of Daniel, and thought they were doing me a favor by allowing me to order a vehicle through treadlightly (1% under invoice). Meanwhile, for my 2014 order the DC buyers group dealership got my named right, full tank of gas, and no hassle net 6% under invoice and were appreciative of my business. Hands down I would order from them again without blinking.

There are several reasons why I order my vehicles in addition to getting exactly what I want. When I order, i turn over my trade in so that there is no loss in value in the event that my order comes in after a new book value comes out. There are additional discounts on factory orders that people don't take advantage of like ad allowances. I get a better deal if the dealer doesn't have to pay flooring. Finally, there is a loyality factor when you order from the same dealer for 20 years that can't be measured in dollars.

I wanted to order the car, so that I could have the packages I wanted (impossible to find a car with lux2 and ORA packages). I also wanted to lease, so this prevented me from customer ordering and I had to settle for one with no ORA. I did install skid plates and tow hooks on though

Nice. Seems like Jeep is offering more options as time goes on ( I suppose I should have gone on the website to answer my own question).

Great configuration ( wish that was around when I ordered last summer), enjoy it when it arrives.

The website didn't specifically allow that configuration. I went to a dealer of choice, and asked if the vehicle could be de-contented of specific items. Set down with the dealer in front of the order computer, and went through each item line by line to see what could and could not be added and removed. In the end I'm getting a limited EcoDiesel without the Lux II package, with trailer tow, with Nav, with ORA I, + body color mirrors & flat fold seat. I will be de-chroming it, adding in an ARB lift, and Mopar wheels. Basically I'm building my own eco-diesel Trailhawk.

I special ordered mine becuase they weren't in dealer inventory yet - but there was another reason: I didn't want to buy a "new" vehicle that others had already taken out on test drives.

I test drove similar vehicles many times. They had less than 10 miles on them, but I still had to put the pedal to the floor to see what they could do. I wanted to break my vehicle in properly!

I have a Cherokee, not Grand, but.....

> Wanted a later build date (early 2014) for this launch vehicle
> Didn't want a vehicle sitting in a lot (perhaps since June 2013) waiting for the transmision fix and then vehicle release.
> Needed the Trailhawk + wanted the Tech Group, UConnect Group and Comfort/Convenience Group - all 3 groups generally not on dealer Trailhawk models.
> Didn't want huge, gaping, open, ugly, raw license plate holes in front bumper:eek:

....and my Liberty was working just fine, so I had the time to order.
