AWD puts power to the wheels that have the most grip so that you retain or regain control when you would otherwise lose it in a 2wd vehicle. This could be in a straight line or while in a corner. Also emergency avoidance manouvers - imagine being at a stop in the rain and the guy behind you is not stopping. Slam the gas in your 2wd to get out of the way and you either spin or crawl out of the way thanks to traction control. With AWD at least you have the grip to punch it and try to get out of the way.

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: Sometimes you need to get out of the way. I can think of several times that I had to get out of an intersection like NOW, and having not had AWD I'd have been hit. Drunk drivers don't take the days where it's rainy off from being drunk too. Other times people have crappy tires (especially in Florida where we didn't have inspections) and can't stop.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

Jeeps looks nice, so many SUV today look like minivans, or are $55k+

For a family with some kids and no desire for a minivan, a Jeep is a nice option. 4x4 is more expensive, and not an essential feature to have.

I will admit, when I bought my 4x2, I felt the same pang of regret as when I had my dog neutred. But saving the $$ got me into the jeep at a price I could afford, and I drive freeway only.

Being from NY with the storms, and snow 4x4 is not an option it's a necessity.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

Looks, plain and simple. I dislike most other SUVs on the market at this size and if I didn't want/need a 4x4, I would still go with the wk2.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I can see why people buy a 4x2, but, atleast, around here, they can't resale them for any decent amount.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

Basically, I have done a lot of towing and have never had a 4x4 so saw no reason to start. 4x2 is just that many less things to go wrong, was less expensive to buy, and less expensive to operate.

For those who need a 4x4, wonderful, I just don't (and tend to keep cars I like far past the sell-by date). Does exactly what I want it to.

Finally doubt I'd have any dificulty selling here since could price below the 4x4s.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I bought a GC with 4x2 because initially I was looking at a Tahoe and found the GC to be:

1. More attractive.

2. A little smaller and easier to park at malls and such.

3. The GC can be equipped very nicely and at a lower cost than a Tahoe.

4. Did I mention it was attractive?

I really have no need for 4x4 as towing is all I would use the GC for other than going to work and trips. Not having 4x4 lowers the purchase price as well as not having all the extra components associated with 4x4 to take care of. The added slightly lower weight of the 4x2 also contributes to better fuel economy, shorter braking distances, and better acceleration. Or at least that is what I tell myself.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I agree on AWD being safer on wet roads.. Like someone above said if you gotta gun in in 2wd your gonna break them loose... AWD you will retain traction and not kick sideways from breakin the two rear wheels loose...

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

With stability/traction control, it is difficult (can but have to be doing something stupid like avoiding a moose) to break anything loose & won't do much good if wheels are in the air.

Since I did not buy it to go off-roading, just thought overall the WK2 was better than an Enclave or Acadia, 4X2 is all I need or want. Do think there are better rain tires than the Goodyears though (have Michelins on others). Used to be Florida had shell aggregate roads that were very high traction. Lately I am seeing a lot of slick asphalt. Wonder why.

Did once have a '70 Grand Prix we called asphyxiation because with a 4-speed and an open rear it would just shred reaar tires. Don't think the V6 has that problem.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I was talking to a woman who had a Patriot. I stopped her to ask about the service department at her dealer. During the conversation she mentioned that she really wanted a Grand Cherokee, but didn't want to pay for 4WD.

I wonder how many folks don't realize that not all GCs (or Jeeps) are 4WD. They might sell a few more if the mentioned it in at least some of their advertising. Jeep and 4WD are like peanut butter and jelly.
