Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I honestly do not understand why...

1. Jeep makes 4x2 vehicles

2. People buy 4x2 Jeep vehicles

It's a JEEP!

You're not buying a minivan or a crossover. It's a Jeep, it's meant to be 4x4.

So, for those that have 4x2 Jeeps around here, please explain to me why you went with 4x2. I don't get it.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

Because not everyone lives in a climate where they need 4WD.

I'm in South Florida and there is absolutely ZERO need for a 4x4. My husband has a 2012 4x4 Rubicon, lifted, special tires, the works , but he is a Jeep Club member and he takes it out to central FL specifically to go 4 wheeling and mudding. Me? Not so much .

Driving to Orlando up the Florida turnpike ain't really a struggle lol. I just think the GC is pretty

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I love mine being 4x2 because i don't off-road with it, I just use it for commuting to work. I love the looks and the V8. Love the 6Sp Auto stick (speed junkie). Sooo comfortable inside. All the luxury goodies it has compared to what I paid for it (no other SUV gave it for the price). But above all, we can be able to upgrade the performance as if it were a true modern muscle car (ie. charger, challenger, etc.) Not everyone use their jeeps for off-roading just because it's a Jeep. Think of GC SRT8, I'll bet you no one uses it off-road!

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

Many use 4x2 Jeeps for towing as they have more truck like features than other cars out there without being a truck.... They provide passenger comfort without being large and impossible to wrangle in a mall parking lot like most pickups.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I don't understand why anyone would buy a 4x2 Wrangler. But the Grand Cherokee is a nice enough all-around SUV in general that I can understand people buying it as a purely on-road vehicle.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

If you don't need it, going with 2WD saves you at least a G and a half or so, if not more. It also saves a bit of weight (150 pounds or so) which can improve acceleration and fuel economy slightly. I suppose you could say that the 2WD is probably less likely to ever need repairs in the future than a 4WD system? But I could be wrong. And depending on the region you're in you might actually have a harder time finding a 2WD on the lot than a 4WD. This is just a guess though.

I don't plan on ever off-roading but I went with 4WD because I'm in a climate where it's useful, I like the extra weight, and it also lowers the CoG slightly.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

When I lived in South Florida I always bought AWD vehicles. The amount of rain we got there, AWD was a HUGE difference maker in safe driving.

People buy 4x2 Jeeps because they don't see it as a Jeep they see it as a crossover they like the looks of.

I bought the 4x4, despite not taking my Overland offroad. I bought it for the residual improvement, and because I just wanted to have it for inclement weather, snow, etc.

Re: Why do people buy 4x2 Jeeps?

I agree with other that people buy a jeep for the looks and therefore don't need a 4x4. I live in socal and wouldnt need 4x4 for the weather conditions, but I'm still going with a 4x4 because of plans to take it offroad every once in awhile.

I always hear people saying this. How does AWD make any difference in terms of safety in the rain? It doesn't help you brake or steer. Are you accelerating so aggressively that you're breaking the tires loose in a 2WD vehicle or something?

If half of your tires have no traction due to hydroplaning, it's nice if the other half DO have power (especially) if one of them is a front wheel.
