Well...yea, in the good old days. But with the MY14+ JGC you can't swap out the sound system because there still is no integration available from third parties for the new computer bus that went into these latest model years.

Re: why no summits

Jim is correct. HK has specifically designed the system for the current model to work exclusively with the newer UConnect system. Not only that- the Logic 7 system that HK uses and which can be seen in many other manufacturers (BMW, Benz, RR etc) is a fairly complex one with its own algorithms to take advantage of the specific interior space and dimensions of the vehicles. The speakers have been carefully located and placed for that reason. Just upgrading the speakers is not going to be enough. This video from HK explains a little of that process. The product was designed and then tested exclusively in Italy on the JGC to get the optimum sound. In my opinion, the results are totally worth it especially when I am playing through my audiophile modded IPOD Classic.

Check out this video from Harman Kardon if you have not stumbled upon this previously:

Re: why no summits

Changing out speakers is the one thing that folks actually can do if they want to...all that is beyond the entertainment system. But replacing the actual entertainment system "head" isn't possible currently as there is no available integration with the JGC computer bus. MY11-13 can take alternative systems, but MY14+, no.

And now for a mere $795 you can have the HK in the Overland.

And, wasn't it something like $1995 in the Summit?

Not sure why the price difference.

HK is standard on summit so its hard to say. Back seat BluRay is a 2k option though. SRT the HK is an option so seems strange the price gap is that big on overland and SRT HK?

Re: why no summits

I understand why.... Just bought one and I'm regretting leaving my German brands for the summit 4x4 eco diesel.
It's a greaaat car but I have yet to go to a dealer that has any semblance of customer service. I miss my park place dealer.... Service and quick turnaround times is something that seems trivial until you lose it.
For the record the GC summit is one of my favorites cars I've owned.... But when u spend 61k for a car you expect the dealer to have its shit together.

Although I see where you're coming from, just how often do you have to visit a dealer to where you are actually regretting purchasing a car that you just stated that you love and is one of the favorites you have owned?
I know German cars are notorious for needing all sorts of service, but unless the car is a lemon or close to it, I just don't see how a dealer would really make or break a deal on a car that you love. I bought my '14 Summit 110 days ago and 2800 miles and the last time I was at the dealership or even thought of it was when I purchased it new. Besides that and maaaayyybe the thought of getting the complimentary oil change done at some point, the dealership isn't even a thought. And btw that's one expensive Summit! I paid 47k plus tax for mine new. I didn't even know you can option one out that high.
I guess the moral of the story is that I have never owned or been in a position to where dealership service caused me to regret purchasing a car that I otherwise love. All the Jeeps I have owned, my Hondas/Acura, and a Toyota have all been so reliable that dealership visits were non-existent. Hope your Jeep treats you well so you don't have to bring it in.

Re: why no summits

I thought the same thing when I made the switch... Dealer experience is irrelevant.
Literally 300 miles on the car and the check engine light turns on ... I live in Fort Worth and bought the car from Austin. Took the car to a disgusting cesspool called meador jeep and they told me it would need transmission work. I was going to need a loaner car and enterprise would need to pick me up.
I took it to another dealer ... They couldn't replicate the problem ... Last dealer erased logs...
The entire time I was waiting in a dirty decrepit waiting area having to listen to shaquanda the receptionist (that's literally her name) smack her lips and inspect her nails instead of resolving her customers concerns.
Anyhow.... I know my experience is unique and shouldn't be construed as normal.... However .... Dealer experience is a viable consideration when purchasing a car.
I usually took my car into park place about 5-6 times a year... Sometimes for a wash other times for complimentary service items ... Tire rotations check engine lights brake problems etc...
I never worried about my car or dreaded going to the dealer... I was actually able to do some work while waiting in the clean service area.
Anyhow lesson learned ... I'll enjoy this car thoroughly but it'll probably be my first and last foray with jeep.

Re: why no summits

^^^ok I understand and sorry that the Jeep started with issues with only 300 miles on the clock. Hopefully that was it and is problem free after that. As for dealerships in it disagreeing with that. It's obviously true and I know from experience with my Acuras. Brought the car in and left with brand new Acura loaner 20 min later no questions asked. That is very nice and something I knew wouldn't happen going into the Jeep. Luckily, it's never been an issue and the Jeep dealers around my area are actually pleasant to be in. Not high end luxury car pleasant to be in, but pleasant enough that I'm good with it.
