Wife Locked Key in Car

Somehow my wife managed to lock her key fob, which was in her purse, in her new GC. Luckily she was at home and the car was in the garage. Unluckily, the second key fob is with me at work. What I can't figure out is how she managed to do it. She claims she never heard the 3 honk warning. Anyone have any ideas? I'm going to run a full test when I get home to see if I can reproduce.

Nope, that's complete and utter crap. Key fobs don't use sound to do their thing, otherwise you'd hear something every time you hit a button (for a cell phone to reproduce it, it needs to be within the range of human hearing, so even ultrasonic noises wouldn't work).

I'm also not sure how she managed to pull it off, the only thing I can guess is that the key's signal must have been muffled by all kinds of junk.

if she is like my wife the thing is burried under everthing in the purse and in the floorboard. if it is it probable is not being registered as "inside the car" and would allow for the button on the handel to lock the doors. the question is "how" did the doors lock not why

After reading this I went outside to experiment.

The only way I could lock my doors with my key in it was to manually lock the doors by pushing down each door lock.

I have mine set so that when I unlock the door all 4 doors unlock. I had to lock each door by pushing down the door lock button.

I can see if you don't have the system set to unlock all doors that you might accidentally push down the driver's door when exiting.

Thanks everyone. The key fob is in her purse on the passenger seat. I'm not sure if there is anything causing it to not be recognized. She did say that she pushed the button on the driver's side door, not realizing she forgot her purse. What I don't understand is why she never got the warning. Perhaps sometthing in her purse is blocking the key signal. I'm pretty sure that she zips the key in an outer pocket, which should really be no different than having the key fob in a pocket. In fact, I have been able to start the car with the key in her purse, on her lap in the passenger seat before. I'm stumped, hoping there is nothing wrong with the keyless entry system.

Well, I just got home and figured out what happened. My wife's purse was on the back seat. She must have left it there when taking the kids out of the car last night. The key fob was buried at the bottom of her purse. She later went into the garage to get something from the car and locked the doors when she was done, not realizing her purse was still in the back.

Apparently, the key fob signal is not strong enough to be detected from the back seat. I just tested this with my second key. I can leave it anywhere in the front of the vehicle and can't get the doors to lock using any method. Anywhere in the back, doors lock using either the door lock switches on the inside or the buttons on either door handle.

So just a quick warning to all, don't ever forget your key fob in the back of the vehicle.

Sorry I didn't see this thread before posting my "Lockout" thread just a minute ago. I had a similar experience today except that my fob was right there in plain view in the cupholder. Can't blame this one on a muffled signal from being at the bottom of a purse or in the backseat.

Re the 3 honk warning-- if you hear that, your doors should not be locking. It's the Jeep telling you to fetch your keys and try again.
