Re: Will Jeep still be Jeep

With the death of the Hummer brand Jeep will keep selling loads.

There aren't many rugged trucks out there anymore.

My GF is looking to buy a new rig . We cant find anything that's not a "mommy mobile".

Off to the Jeep store we go.

Hands off FIAT!

Yes....no comparison. The GC is way more refined yet still reasonably off road capable with the ORA2 option. They are very different vehicles targeting different buyers.

Re: Will Jeep still be Jeep

Have owned a 1997 Wrangler, 1999 GJC, 2004 JGC, 2007 Wrangler, and now a 2014 Ecodiesel JGC. Hands down the 2014 is my favorite, and just as capable as the others both on and off road. If I am planning on straight off roading, I will take the Wrangler, but that is only because I will wait a year or 2 before I take a $50,000 jeep and beat on it. It will be less painful to scratch up in a few years. I have done some moderate off roading in the 2014, and so far, I am impressed.

Chrysler bellies back up to the corporate welfare trough | Troy Media

It's pretty routine for manufacturers to ask for concessions from jurisdictions to get them to locate facilities in a given area. Car manufacturers and airplane manufacturers are at the top of the pack in this respect. They are going to try and work the best deal they can get to reduce costs and get faster ROI for establishing a manufacturing presence. It's a big business thing...not a car builder thing.

I hear you on that.

Maybe I'm feeling it's just too soon for Fiat to be holding it's hand out.
Especially when bragging in a few rags about how profitable they are.

It's also partly shocking because there is a Ford plant 15 minutes away from that Chrysler plant that announced it's hiring hundreds...yet they didn't ask for a penny from the tax payers.

Interesting!

Re: Will Jeep still be Jeep

If that is a new Ford plant, then it would be unusual for them not to have negotiated for favorable business conditions. If it's an existing plant, that may have been done long ago.

Re: Will Jeep still be Jeep

In many instances it's the government that starts these discussions. I live in Delaware, but our radio stations run adds promoting New York as a place to do business. The ad says something like start or expand a business in NY and pay no taxes for some number of years.

My '11 Acura MDX was built in Canada. A year later I read they moved production to the US. I'd bet a wooden nickel that somebody made a better offer.

As for the Ford plant, do you know whether or not they got some deal in the past, for either building or keeping the plant?

Business needs to make money and government needs to do whatever it takes to see that over time they get a piece of it.

Ford probably didn't ask for tax concessions to hire people....but I have yet to see ANY large manufacturer with new "green field" plant construction do it without state, local and power company concessions. Its standard practice for the state and local entities to create a bid package of concessions to compete for the new plant.

If Canada doesn't want the hundreds of millions in construction, materials, services, and long term employment, we're more than happy to take them here in Tennessee. ☺

I find it interesting because Ford was bragging how they didn't want the hand hand out when times were tougher than they are now. Yet now they are standing in line.

Your post is essentially what Ford is saying.

I don't think Tennessee in the top 3 places for Chrysler.
If Canada(they like the cash and the free health care) doesn't get the investment it will probably end up in Mexico.

Where did anybody say Ford had their hand out?

You know, I swear that "handout" stuff would stop when Chrysler PAID THE GOVERNMENT BACK.

Well, enough of that...

Where is this Ford plant that's 15 minutes away from JNAP?

I think they are talking about a Ford plant in Canada, near a possible new Chrysler/Fiat plant.
