Possibly true, but most WW-II vehicles known as jeeps were made by Ford--due to ability to scale production.
And the original prototype was made by someone who made British Austins under license in the USofA.

Easily handled, just say "No, eh" and I'm sure there will be folks with abandoned manufacturing plants in the USofA that might be willing to invest in some jobs for their local areas.

This has gotten so warped it is insane. Companies are making decisions based on what they can get for tax breaks, and not on how they can make awesome products that people want - with a team that wants to make them and make them better..

and our elected leaders have, at best, a "next election" horizon.

There is a book "Metal Fatigue: American Bosch and the Demise of Metalworking in the Connecticut River Valley" which talks about this "give me a free plant" mentality (and a lot of other things) long before most of us would think it was going on..

The issue is that they make what their research tells them we want
Which is NOT in most cases what we want
Also they build cars with compromises in all areas so they can build to a profit
