True, but the real issue is hard packed snow and ice on the road. The "snowflake/mountain" symbol tires are made with a winter compound rubber for the treads.

There's no planning ahead when your driving over a bridge and catch some black ice. Your all-season tire is not going to be much help.
How about if someone else around you suddenly looses control and you need to react quickly? All-seasons wont help you there either.

It doesn't take much for that one thing to happen that hasnt happened to you in 30-40 years. I like to be prepared and not just leave it up to luck.

Ah, but do those plows coat the resulting ice/slush/snow coated pavement with sand and gravel and deicer to the point where they are bare, non-slippery pavement?

Getting stuck isn't the worst thing that can happen--clobbering somebody's multimillion dollar rare vehicle and giving all passengers who happen to all be traffic liability lawyers in it whiplash might be a bit worse.

OK, would you believe that new 4wd Ferrari with good snow tires, and you just rear ended it and the owner is 350 pounds and an active WWF wrestler whose wife just threw him out of the house because she found out about his girlfriend who just dumped him and he is just driving around on snow with noplace to go, but a really really bad attitude?

Re: Winter's Coming - Let's talk snow tires

Greetings,

My 1st Choice is Nokian then Cooper's

The stopping ability with the Nokian Rotiva AT is the best so far that I have experienced with an AT tire. The WRG3 SUV is suppose to have better stopping power. And then again, nothing beats their dedicated tires.

Since you are in much cold climate than I am, the tire compounds is very important for handling and braking. Nokian uses a soft compound as oppose to a hard one, thus the better gripping power.

As somebody said here before, depending on the type of snow, depth of the snow and the type of tire tread, you can get stuck.

Best for now.

I have 18" black steel rims with Cooper Weathermasters. Great setup. Quiet and smooth on the highway and great grip in deep snow.

Re: Winter's Coming - Let's talk snow tires

I've had Nokians for other vehicles and got a set for the wife's van. They're the best. Canadian Tire has on sale (last day today) some Cooper AT/W. Similar to the highly rated AT3. They're quite new, W stands for improved winter performance. Just like the Nokians, they have the snowflake designation. Not available in a 265/50/R20, but were available in the 275/55/R20, these are bigger than stock, but many have put these on with no rubbing issues. < $ 200/tire today.

Re: Winter's Coming - Let's talk snow tires

I travel to North Eastern Vermont almost every weekend from central New Hampshire. Had the Blizzaks and wasn't impressed in the snow. Have a set of the studded Cooper Weathermasters for this year. They have to be a better set of winter sneakers.
