2011 Jeep FIre ONE MONTH OLD !

BURNT 2011 Grand Cherokee

I think if I owned a 2011 or 2012, I'd unplug the wiring to the passenger side visor.

She's not greedy, she's smart (especially by going to the press over it).

And I'd be doing the exact same (as would anyone else in her position). If my (damn near) new car just burst into flames due to a manufacturing error, I'd expect a like replacement. And If they can't get me an exact replacement, then the next closest thing (new).

The fault lies with the manufacturer, not the owner of the vehicle in this case.

Jeep will be lucky if they don't get nailed with another recall on this one (at a min, that bit of the car and any reports similar will come under extensive scrutiny now). I'd expect the PR damage will be pretty gnarly.

Re: WK2 catches fire... eek!

If she had 24,000 miles on the car, she is entitled to receive the value of a car with 24,000 miles on it. I'm sure that is what her insurance company offered her. That's why she has insurance.

This is just another case of somebody wanting to benefit from something that happened, rather than be put back where she was. If she was hit by another driver and the other driver was at fault, she wouldn't be entitled to a new car from that driver.

And because so many people want more, they support this behavior.

I would gladly pay the 1600 and get a new Jeep. But the squeaky wheels get the grease.

Is this actually covered by insurance?

My inclination is "No"

Why? Because if Jeep is offering her a new Jeep if she pays the diff, that means her insurance isn't paying anything...

It wasn't an accident, or uninsured motorist, it was poor build/manufacturer defect. The onus is on the them, not her, not her insurance company.

Has nothing to do with entitlement, and everything to do with backing your product.

Re: WK2 catches fire... eek!

Most people in this situation go through their comprehensive insurance and get on with their lives. Then it is up to the insurance company to recover from the at fault party.

She chose to go to Chrysler because she wants a new car, not what she had, a used car.

I think the offer sounds fair. If its truly only going to cost her $1600 thats a great deal. The vehicle was driven 24K miles and that does count for something its not free. Cars have defects and sometimes parts fail and sometimes new parts fail and this failure happened to cause a fire. This does not mean every time you have a failure there is a recall. If there was a pattern of many vehicles having this issue then that would probably warrant a recall. If I'm driving my jeep and the fuel pump happens to fail because of a defect it does not mean every Jeep needs to be recalled to replace the fuel pump. It would just mean mine happen to have one that went bad.

Re: WK2 catches fire... eek!

Isn't it covered under the 36k bumper to bumper warranty? Jeep should repair the damage (meaning 100 percent new interior) OR give her a new Jeep. Done deal. A 2012 car spontaneously catching on fire? Ya, give me a break. Jeep needs to fold on this one. There are probably 2012s or 2013s in inventory somewhere. They don't need to give her a 2014.

Re: WK2 catches fire... eek!

First off, I'd like to know why the hell she stayed in the Jeep and watched it burn, my ass would have been out of there. Glad she is ok. I agree with Jackspat on the 12-13 thing. Pity.

If Jeep thoroughly has inspected this vehicle or does and this is dicovered to be a one off nothing else will happen. The offer they gave her is good but yes Milous is complete correct, this will unsell many Jeeps.

Had a client of a client start a Cadillac SRX in a parking lot at Walmart and the air bag went off. GM did the same type of upgrade, little to no cost and the client was happy. Faulty Sensor, but only one not a production problem.

This is still ugly any way you look at it!

Most imporatantly though is that she was not injured.
Man, I can't imagine being in the passenger seat at that moment. Just fire pouring out of the roof onto you. Nightmare scenario IMHO

Totally agree. It is terrible any time this happens to anyone. But I can see everyone's point about this so far.
Would never wish it on anyone but out of the Millions of vehicles manufactured, errors occur and sometimes there is simply faulty parts.

Will need to see what happens here.
