I never thought about it like that but you have a very good point. The defense industry has all the leading edge tech what if all those people worked for the US auto industry instead. Though I think there are plenty of good engineers to go around in the US. I think the poor quality that plagued the US automakers in the 90s had more to do with poor business decisions (endless cheapening of the product) than engineering talent.

I agree thats why quality went down but many of the inovations that are now becoming commonplace were either developed or perfected in Japan or Germany.

Disagree with that...not even Chrysler will post a residual close to that. Shoot for 45%, and you may be close. However, you are still losing less than a BMW or Benz even if it will have a 55% residual!

Re: Wk2 chosen over 'other' luxury brands

Wow great thread. All being said the MDX is a great car if you have kids you need to taxi around it's the next best thing to a minivan and personally it's all about taste and OMG I think it's very ugly. Not to mention the base price with no options no nav no nothing it's the same price as overland. X5 I've always loved the look and I would consider but went to test it and to get it equipped is way to expensive and all I can think is if I want to keep it more than 3 yrs it 1G to get new brakes and 100 for an oil change. The rover is a great vehicle but same prices for maintenance and I had 1 in 2004 was in the dealer more time than I drove it, actually in a fit of rage I drove by a jeep dealer big signs 0% financing and drove out with JCG 2005 on the spot never test drove it or anything. I just wanted something American that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg for new brakes and an oil change. Dealer experience was great. When I took off driving I was shocked. I thought something was wrong to good to be true great ride and lots of features, it's the car I had the longest in my life I had it over 5 years. Been looking for 2 years to get a new car but I'm a car fan I really have to like it the looks the features, love the mdx but it looks so horrible and don't want 3 rows. Stumbled into the auto show here NY in 2009 and wow was shocked to see how perfection was improved, been anxiously waiting ever since. Now that I have 200 miles on my Overland all I have to say it's like shock all over again. It's like not even in the same league or game for that matter of the 2005 which I was sad to see go it never gave me one problem and always drove like the day I drove it off the lot, but the overland drives better than the rover I had it's tight quiet fast smooth drives like a sports car in sport mode really lowers and grips on the curves. The 5.7 really is great I had a 6 in my 2005. The only problem is drove 50 miles to CT yesterday and was going 85 and wasn't aware so quiet can't even hear the wind. Really amazing buy and nothing is even remotely possible that can also tow and climb for that price. Sorry this may seem sexest but look at who drives the lexus RH and the MDX ? 90% moms I just couldn't see my sled in that. If it becomes the best selling suv and there all over the place so be it don't care cause it's that good. Very happy so far if the reliability is like the 2005 will keep it forever cause can't see how something new will be so great that I'll want to get it and trade this in. I know people like brands so good for them get the x5 and rover but I just need to like what I drive be comfortable and confident that when I want to go it will always be go no matter how much snow or where the trail is up in the adirondacks I'm always comfortable my jeep will get there. What's better than that. Get there in style with toasty warm hands on that heated steering wheel to boot. Didn't see anything else out there that gave me that confidence. I know thou it's not for everyone. Different strokes for different folks.

Re: Wk2 chosen over 'other' luxury brands

It will be a week tomorrow since I got my Jeep and I must admit that I have not seen another single 2011 GC on the street yet. I love it! I should also add that I live and work in Los Angeles which is filled to the top with X5's, MB ML's and Audi Q7's, etc...

I actually can't wait to pull up next to another 2011 GC so I give them a

Hard to see that 45%, in 36 months on a Overland. The reason is the supply will be small and the demand high. For 25K you can buy a 3 yr old Overland, there will be no car in its price that has the same level of utility. At auction they will sell for over 55% , and retail for more. The Overland is like a unicorn once you see it you must have it.

I've been saying the same thing, though it's only because I've actually never seen one live.

Re: Wk2 chosen over 'other' luxury brands

As a point of reference on used SUV prices. My '07 GMC Acadia SLT, (leather and nav, etc) sold to me (in Dec of 06) for about $37,000.....if memory serves. I now have 90k miles on it.....and the Dealer will give me $23,000 for it.....or I can sell it myself. I still keep my near invoice negotiated price on the new Jeep - either way. So, this is a wholesale-type price.

$14k over four years is OK by me.....and I kinda expect the same from the Jeep Overland.....as they will still be a hot commodity......sorta like the used Acadia's are now......with a little luck.

I may try to selll the Acadia on CL for $25k.....(its got a NEW tranny) and make my deal $2k better. (the dealer will work the sales tax on a "dealer trade' at time of sale.)
