MODERN TECHNOLOGY?
Bull crap!
Manufacturers have put batteries under seats since the 50's. Probably earlier.
It is just a way to "encourage" owners to take the autos back for service. It's a game.

The AGM in my miata lasted 10 years. Never had a problem using a regular battery charger.

I use a Ctek, no issues at all. It has a setting for gel cells.

Correction, for non-gel cells. Typed too fast.

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

Has anyone installed dual batteries? Will this new battery effect the installation/use of a dual battery system for 4wding etc

Perfect for dual batteries.
Use a AGM for the auxiliary battery. It then matches the existing battery.
I have used AGM batteries for a second battery for 5 years same battery.
Run it flat a few times with the fridge.

I worked out I can get 2 small AGM in the tyre well between the tyre and air tank will need to cut the plastic well liner.

Perhaps under the hood and under the seat, they need to get more space is wasted space? I'm just curious, why it moved under the hood and why moving the seat.

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

In two previous trucks, Cherokee and humer h3 I had red and yellow top optima battery's (only one battery in each car but mentioning e fact ive used both sucessfully)and was able to run my engel fridge overnight and as along as I took the truck for a drive for a few hours in the day I never had any issues with the battery over 3+ years. I actually bought a engel solar panel(80watt) kit to trickle charge when i sit the car at the campsite all day. The yellow top was a 750cca designed for cranking and deep cycle. I just found the 12v outlet in the centre console and thought I might run the fridge off my 2011 overland and potentially run the solar panel during the day when not driving. Seeing this battery is a 700cca which I believe is a decent battery do you think I could get away with the small load I put on it with the fridge at night? I know it's a "how long is a piece" of string question but perhaps another gc owner has done it before and could let me know if I'll kill this battery or simply drain it worse case and I can get the solar panels to bring it back to life. The engel solar panel has a little computer attached to regulate charge so it wont overcharge and its only a small trickle so it shouldn't overload like a transition charger plugged into the wall might. Any thoughts appreciated !

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

Bjmase,
I would not be comfortable doing that in an isolated location by yourself.
I have the Yellow top optima 750cca and flattened it overnight 45c outside with a 35lt engle 20 years old fridge.
My 18lt waeco will run nearly 2 days.
Engle make a battery saver.
I know you have the solar panel but will it raise a totally flat battery?

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

I'm not sure it would raise it from dead but I also don't plan on heading anywhere too remote and I'll be with others over the trips to come to jump me if required. I agree that if it's hot enough outside your fridge can work bloody hard overnight and I haven't had that experience as yet. Im just hoping the battery can cope close to the level that the Optima's I've used and if so I'll be wrapped. The standard battery in the hummer was terrible and died very quickly attempting the same use of a fridge working it overnight. Cup weekend I'll be taking the overland on a trip so we'll see how we go and I'll keep an eye on the voltage.

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

What is the procedure for disconnecting the negative cable from the battery? How do you open up the cover to the battery?

Thanks!

Put the front passenger seat all the way forward and as high as it will go. Then , from the rear seat, just flip open the cover.
