Also, look under the bonnet (hood) of a V8 and tell me where you'd fit the battery in that engine bay...

There's been lots of problems with it. The heat cycles age a battery prematurely. The newer type can't out-gas or spill so can be used safely under the seat in the passenger compartment. The better environment means that these batteries should last a lot longer, offsetting most of their additional expense.

That and the reasons cited by others.

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

Has any one replaced a battery in their WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

If the battery has been replaced how much did the battery cost

What was the battery brand and number?

Thanks

Re: WK2 - New battery type and location

There are 2 battery sizes. the 2011 came out with an odd size battery very hard to get in AUS, they made a new battery retaining clamp so a more standard battery could be fitted.
My battery was replaced under warranty and came with the new clamp.

Also, front passenger seat has to be removed in order to pull the battery. The negative cable can be accessed and removed by moving the seat forward and removing the battery cover.
Every time I log on I find some new bad news about the GC! The battery is under the passenger seat??!!! And we have to remove the seat to get to it? There is absolutely no direction in the manual as to how to do this. Many diagrams and instructions for the simplest of other functions, but nada for this critical element. "..... under normal operating " no off-gassing? There is nothing normal about this.

Give me my '87 cherokee straight six back! Oh wait, it kept stalling ... but only after 100k miles - had that beauty for 19 years.

New rig is pretty, but omg.

The battery can be replaced without removing the seat, I watched my dealer do it to my 2015 on Friday morning. Its a little cumbersome, but manufacturers have been putting batteries under seats and in trunks for quite a while now.

So you're not worried about the venting of the battery?
Many thanks for your reply.

While it's from the 2011 MY, I don't think much has changed to the 2015's...

Even if there was a venting issue, you're at far higher risk of exposure to bad stuff collecting in the cabin with frequent use of the remote starter, especially in winter when snow may trap the exhaust under the vehicle and allow the fumes to seep inside.

The fact is, this is nothing new.

If there were an issue with it, someone would have discovered it by now.

It is an AGM battery.
Lot safer then a lead acid battery.

Not that much, I have been using AGM's and Optima batteries in passenger and trunk areas for over a decade with stereo systems. Never had one fail where it gassed or split. 90 degrees under the seat is a million times better than 200 degrees under the hood. Plus it may not seem like much but it helps move weight back and off the front wheels improving overall balance.
