Also, look under the bonnet (hood) of a V8 and tell me where you'd fit the battery in that engine bay...

There's been lots of problems with it. The heat cycles age a battery prematurely. The newer type can't out-gas or spill so can be used safely under the seat in the passenger compartment. The better environment means that these batteries should last a lot longer, offsetting most of their additional expense.

That and the reasons cited by others.
