Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

Thank you all for your replies. I am leaning more towards the GC.

I think the comfort and safety features are definitely important at this point. I am afraid of getting the Wrangler and then spending extra money on mods :-).

We do take frequent road trips to visit grandparents, so the GC is probably the better choice. I like the idea of getting a GC now, while the kid(s) are young. Once they get a bit older, I may switch to Wrangler Unlimited.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I have both. With children, the WK2 is the only reasonable choice, for safety reasons.

Maybe it's a 2-door vs 4-door thing, maybe it's the 4.10 gears, but while I wouldn't want to go on a 1000 mile trip in it, I find the JKR to be a much more fun and engaging ride.

With nav, heated leather, auto climate control, and insulated hard top it almost feels civilized. When the top is off it's something else altogether...

I've got both and love them both. They take turns being my daily driver an my wife's as we each enjoy driving them.

Just bought a camping trailer and the JKU with 4.5" lift, 37" tires and 5.38 gears towed it like a champ and then wheeled all weekend.

That's a terrible reason! I've spent thousands on mods for my WK2, and the mod bug will hit you too Wrangler or Grand Cherokee. Especially if you hang around on here. Everyone on here is a bad influence and love to help you spend your money!

That being said, LOL, I also think the Grand is better for you. I wanted a Wrangler really badly for years but after 5 Grands now it seems common sense always prevails. We travel a lot, and the creature comforts and drive quality always seem to win out for us.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

We have a 2014 JK right now. This my third one. I am waiting on my WK2 to be built and will be trading the JK in on it so I know exactly what you are going back and forth between.

The JK has been great for our family (my son is 8) but it is becoming less useful for it's top down abilities. The premium top this year has been a great addition, but it is still loud and gets old on long trips. My son often feels isolated in the back as it is tough to talk. In addition, we decided to pick up a travel trailer and it is really beyond the JKs towing capabilities.

I love the JK around town but usually find we leave the top up any time we are going to touch an Interstate or highway so it is almost always out on the weekend.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

Just my thoughts from owning both.

Size -

The JK has more cargo room, but with less passenger room and comfort.
Overall win to the GC for the comfort. If cargo room is a concern JK.

Driving -
The JK is a horrible highway vehicle and with any wind becomes an annoyance to drive. The JK will drive though things stock I wouldn't ever consider in the GC.

The GC sails down the highway and even with the v6 has plenty of power.

FUN -
GC luxury and gadget fun
JK - offroad and top off fun

Oh no, what did i get myself into?

Looks like i did join the right forum though! So far, i definitely value everyone's advice. I am glad I checked with people who experienced both vehicles. My wife is definitely on board with getting a GC.
