Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I'll chime in with my $0.02.

I was seriously set on the JK Unlimited.
We stopped at the dealer just for grins to test drive.
Wife saw the GC and said she wanted to take one of those out also.

Took the JK out first.
Good acceleration, good headroom (I'm 6'3") and not as bouncy as I thought it would be. A bit noisy, but nothing a good stereo can't cover.

We came back to the dealer and performed one final 'test' on the JKU. Getting in and out of the back seat....
Getting in was easy.
Getting out with the high door sills was a pain in the ass.

Then we took out the GC.
Wow, just wow.
Night and day difference.
Very smooth ride, MUCH better acceleration (especially at highway speeds) even though they had the same engine/transmission.
And quiet? Wow. Made me feel like I should have been wearing ear plugs in the JKU (and that was with a hard top).

Then the final 'test'. Getting in and out of the back seat.
Yeah, much easier.

We stopped at the dealer only to test drive...
Ended up driving off the lot with a new GC 3 hours later (trading in a vehicle that I really liked a lot).

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

A coworker of mine got his wife a JK for their family vehicle. I think they have two young kids. He was all excited about it, talking about modding it and all. Not long after, he was complaining that the back seats were terrible and the kids didn't like riding in it. About a year later, the JK is gone and he got a new Expedition instead.

Go with a WK2. If nothing else, the GC is 100x safer than the JK in every respect. No death wobble from worn out solid axle component, no tin can tub on a truck frame design, airbags everywhere, crumple zones, etc. Things to think about as a new father.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I was in the same exact situation. New dad and was considering buying a 4 Door Wrangler to replace my VW Touareg.

I wanted the Jeep because I wanted a simpler car. My Touareg had all kinds of gremlins.

Well, lo and behold, a driver ran a red light and broadsided me in the Touareg with my 15 month old in the back seat. Fortunately, no one was hurt and my car was only minimally damaged (the car next to me to brunt of impact and was totalled and both driver and passenger seriously hurt).

I couldn't imagine what would have happened to my son had I been in a Wrangler. That made my decision... Grand Cherokee. Chose a High Altitude package.

Worse case, get a GC and then throw some AT tires on it and lift kit and then you have best of both worlds.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I love my '12 JKU

I drive about 130 miles per day
85% toll road at 80+ mph
5% no road at....3 mph

My Sahara does a fantastic job at both.

But....

The Jgc will do BETTER for 85% of my day.....I hope. Someday I'll find out.

At 80mph My JKU is turning 2500rpm and burning 15.5mpg
At 60mph she's turning 2000rpm and burning 19mpg.
Nothing to brag about, but not too shabby for something as aerodynamic as a cinder-block with pin-stripes.
Hopefully the JGC-Hemi will be SLIGHTLY better on go-juice.

Conversely, the JGC has the charisma of a station-wagon on steroids and looks exactly like every other cross-over SUV on the road.....gotta use your remote to pick out which one is yours in a crowded parking lot.

So....I'm getting a Jgc (and keeping the JKU for naked fun....it's ok if you don't know what that means...it's a wrangler thing...lmao)

In short....each has its strengths and weaknesses. Getting in and out of the back seat of a JKU is challenging. The backseat of a jk (2door) was created as an alternative interrogation technique to replace water-boarding.

Damage to a Jgc is a catastrophic trauma that will result in multiple threads of sniveling.

Damage to a wrangler is an excuse to mod.

Completely different vehicles.

Completely different experiences.

Completely different philosophical values behind the wheel.

Just acquisition of which is right for YOU...not a question of which is right.

Lol

Happy trails.

V.

I literally had the same Jeep shopping experience. Went in for a Wrangler Unlimited. Wife and I left with an Altitude III.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

Putting anyone in the back seat of a JK or JKU is cruel and unusual punishment. I have a '14 Grand Cherokee Overland diesel and a '12 JK Rubicon. If you want a nice family car, with a REALLY comfortable back seat, good fit and finish on delivery an great safety, buy a Chevy Equinox. We traded my wife's for the GC so we could pull our offroad trailer. The GC is a dream, and the Rubicon serves a purpose, but if you're not going off-road the Equinox is the superior vehicle to both for families in my opinion.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I was in a very similar situation. I owned a 07' JKU Rubicon that I had modded quite a bit; lift kit, tires, bumpers, rock rails, lights, etc, etc.... I had a LOT of fun with that truck and I absolutely loved it. I had 120k miles on her.

However, recently my wife and I had our 1st baby. My priorities changed and I decided that a more comfortable daily driver (25 miles each way to work), better highway comfort, better MPG's, better safety, better space in the back for a car seat, better technology, better towing were more important that the awesome fun of my JKU. I traded in my 07' JKU Rubicon for a 2015 GC Overland. I do really miss my wrangler but being a dad brings out different life views. I loved off-roading and taking the top off... but when you have a family it's hard to find time to go off roading... and not something that I can take take our 4 month old child to go do anyway for safety and practicality (let me stop on the trail to give her a bottle, hold on a sec)

I love my GC... but i'm sure i'll save up for a older TJ and mod the heck out of her to get back into off-roading one day. If life/time permits anyway.

Regards,

Brian

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I looked at Wranglers because I really wanted a manual transmission, having had on on my previous truck. I even tested on along with a friend who wanted a Wrangler.

The problem is, I started pricing out all the options and was up over $35K before I was done.

I realized I could have all the same options (standard) and more for only a few thousand more with the GC. Plus, I got a quieter, more comfortable and safer vehicle that could tow much more.

Had the Wrangler been under $30K for what I wanted, I would have bit. For me, with the value I got out of the GC, the Wrangle seemed far overpriced.

Oh, and I don't miss the manual tranny. I'm happy with the paddle shifters for the occasional times I want to take control.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I bought a 2013 JKU Sahara. I loved it for a year, but traded for a 2014 WK2 Overland.

No real complaints on the JKU, rugged so many upgrades for it, and the go anywhere feeling.

I wanted something with a little more comfortable/refined interior, and easier to drive with and get in/out for "older" family members, but still have the capabilities of a 4x4.

Also I wasn't wheeling as much as I used to when I had my previous 04 Rubicon.

I absolutely love my Overland. So many features, the ride is amazing and still can off road a bit when I need or want. Plus I think the WK2 is the most amazing looking SUV out thereImageUploadedByJeepGarage1449421211.972772.jpg

I had a similar conversation with my friend who was looking, I convinced him a GC was a better long term option for his family. They are a different beast but showed him the GC would do almost everything he wanted and more daily driver family friendly. loaded up they are also in the same price range, a loaded up Rubicon is over 51K.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I wouldn't even consider the Rubicon unless it was my weekend vehicle. I have no idea how people daily those things. The WK2 is such a comfortable vehicle. If you have a family, do them justice and get a family vehicle.
