WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. I am trying to decide between WK2 and Wrangler Unlimited to serve as our family vehicle. I am a new father and it is time to get rid of my Honda Civic and upgrade to something bigger.

While I understand that there are big differences between the two vehicles, I am curious to hear from those who have been in the same boat as me and have decided to buy one over the other. Which vehicle did you buy and what was the main reason for the decision?

Any input is appreciated!!

Thanks!

They really are two completely different vehicles, and it depends on what your need is. I personally REALLY want a built up JK, but for me being a daily driver, I chose the GC due to the luxury and tech that it has over the JK. Not to mention the extra space as well.

Basically, a stock JK is trivial IMO, if you go off-road a lot and need the capability, buy the JK. If you want a nice daily driver SUV, then get the GC.

Having owned both the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee, go with the GC.

The GC is definitely more of a daily driver. More importantly as a new father you are going to want a vehicle that is quieter and doesnt leak when it rains.

The wrangler is a great vehicle and a ton of fun to own/customize. For your specific situation, especially with the newest addition, go with the GC. Youll be much happier.

+1

The GC on order for me is my third one. I drove a wrangler from Fargo to the black hills, to Glacier National Park and back to Fargo once, that alone was enough to tell me I didnt want one as a daily driver. The GC is light years ahead in technology and refinement.

But that is me, I put on enough highway miles to desire a more comfortable ride.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I'm going to have to agree with the others. Before I committed to the purchase of the WK2 Jeep grand cherokee, I took one of the 4 door wranglers out for a test drive. I've always liked the wranglers but never owned one before just grand cherokees. Although I liked it, it was not as nice as the GC nor was the ride as comfortable not to mention the bells, whistles and creature comforts were also missing from the wrangler. So I was committed to the GC and I'm very happy with it. The 4x4 is no slouch off roading either. My friend said it felt like he was riding in a Cadillac on or off road. The kids absolutely love it and it's got plenty of room for groceries. Heck when I took it out off roading the first time I chugged right past a wrangler that just got stuck in the mud and my jeep was sporting the street tires it came with from the factory. It was to laugh. I love my WK2 GC. Glad I got it. Hope this helps. Oh by the way mine is the diesel option. Tons of power and about 33 mpg highway and 22 city in a 4x4 at that. Well hope this helps you. Best regards rex

I have a Wrangler 4 door now and love it. Fun to drive, etc. Wrangler is loud and unpleasant on trips > 60 minutes, and the backseat is terrible for adults to sit in. It is rear wheel drive when not in 4 wheel mode so not so hot in weather unless it is deep enough to put into 4 wheel drive. I commute in mine ( <60 minutes ) and LOVE it. My dog loves it. Your kids will love it.

Buy the Grand Cherokee unless your family drive time will be short. The Wrangler is much more "Fun" in my humble opinion, but are you looking for a fun car or a family car?

Paul

My youngest is now 18. I had a two GC's when the kids were little. The GC is better suited for life with a little one. When your child is older he/she will have fun with you in a Wrangler. Maybe by that time they will finally ditch the solid axels and it will be a better on road vehicle too...

GC has better safety ratings too.

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

No doubt about it new father the GC is a lot more convenient. Also safer. Just all around though the GC is better. When your kids older and if your not driving a ton go for the Wrangler. I've owned both love my GC currently wouldn't have a wrangler as a daily driver as I simply drive too much, but with that said also love my gf's wrangler.

So basically the best advice I have for you is buy the GC and talk your wife into a wrangler. You win on all fronts.

So you are a new father. In which case you should have no consideration for any of the following that the WK2 offers over the JK:
  • superior drive harshness/smoothness
  • better noise insulation
  • improved creature comforts like heated rear seats and superior ventilation
  • enhanced ingress/egress options for a baby seat or stroller etc. - if you choose the models with a Quadra-Lift suspension
  • higher safety ratings not just from sheer number of airbags but other active and passive features like cross-path detection, blind spot monitoring, active braking for collision avoidance/mitigation
  • better driving dynamics and fuel economy
  • increase wife(significant other) acceptance factor
It is obvious that the better family vehicle (WK2) is not really on your mind and deep down you want that bad-ass JK on 32 inch tires with Dana axles, because you need convincing from us.

What are the folks on the JK boards telling you ?

Get the WK2. And you can still be a week-end warrior. Just get the right WK2 model with the toys needed to go off-road and you will be equipped for everything off-road that a JK can do except extreme shit like rock climbing over 2 feet boulders or going through 2 feet of mud. What normal people do that anyways?

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I have recently traded my '13 JKU Sahara for a '15 GC LTD 4wd. I drove (and loved) my JKU for 2.5 years and 45,000 miles but I was missing the creature comforts of the SUV's I had previously owned. I didn't remove the tops often and never did take the doors off so I wasn't using it, as some would say, as it was supposed to be used. I did only lose $3000 in that 2.5 years which is simply hard to beat. And I am currently selling most of the parts I had added. I love the new GC as well and I am no longer always thinking about what mod I could do next. Oh...the back seat of the JKU is a pain to get in and out of!

Re: WK2 or Wrangler Unlimited for Family

I have had a 2013 JKU Rubicon, 2011 GC Laredo and now 2015 GC Overland. I've personally enjoyed the GC much more as a daily driver. The comfort and convenience cannot be beat. The JKU, as some have said, are a lot of fun and there is no doubt about that and modding possibilities. My commute was only 20 miles a day and the JKU got old. Mine was lifted so maybe that made a difference though.

I like rubberjeeps idea that's the best of both worlds and in reference to trudging through 2 feet of mud, that's where the wrangler was stuck when I drove past him lol. If you do get a WK2 you can check out my WK2 Full Harness protection Shield.
