RG, this is Steamboat, CO backcountry, though we've had conditions like this at Steamboat Ski resort, inbounds, many times. Best tree skiing anywhere, plus a cool Western town. If you have the coin, Steamboat Powder Cats are the longest running cat operation in the US, and they get 500" of snowfall in their terrain.

If you guys haven't done it yet, also suggest Utah if you're powderhounds. Alta/Snowbird is the mecca.

I've gotta get out west for skiing someday. I would need to acclimate to powder skiing though. The closest I've come to it is when Wisp would get 6-8" of fresh stuff and we'd use our First Tracks status to go out early. But that's nothing like what you're talking about.

I'm an ice-grinding edge guy cuz that's all I've ever done. I'm used to hearing that raucous skittering sound of edges on crust, anything else and I'd be wondering WTH I was! Someday...

Regarding the tow strap--you're going to want something close to 20klbs. You want at least double the weight of your car + the car you're pulling out. A 5klbs will not be nearly enough nor safe.

Re: WK2 Snow Beast Tips - Post 'Em Here

I personally like having 5k rated (really about 10k breaking strength) because I'd rather have the strap break then do structural damage to my car or the other persons... the weakest link should be the strap!

Nylon straps also have very little recoil when they snap, so its not a safety concern like a metal rope strap

Alta/Snowbird are awesome; however don't overlook Solitude. Like the other two resorts, it's on the west side of the Wasatch mountains and gets the same fabulous powder. Honeycomb Canyon and Headwall Forest are just so much fun! If you are an expert skier, ask a local about the "Milk Run" (not a signed run) - that's the run that convinced me to get going and buy a helmet.

Re: WK2 Snow Beast Tips - Post 'Em Here

+1 to Durango and Rotor's rescue strap comments. I've taken the mid level approach with nylon only at 10k lb. ratings, if the strap breaks at that point then the rig being rescued is in deep and needs more help. I also have a 4k strap with hooks for light duty but would never use it for offroading or tougher situations - as both of you point out probably better to scrap this one altogether.

+1 to Big Cottonwood Canyon netcoolery, and + rep for the stash beta at Solitude.

CP, we learned how to ski the ice, rain, mud and rocks at Seven Springs and Wisp - floating pow is much easier than ice once you let them run a bit. Kinda like driving in the snow, though that will undoubtedly draw some flaming.

Snow, that's the reason I buy Jeeps. Not off-roading or rock climbing. This Jeep commercial From back in the early nineties sold me on Jeeps. I've been driving them ever since.

Re: WK2 Snow Beast Tips - Post 'Em Here

Another member referred these tire storage racks, great way to keep them from getting banged up and off the floor for space savings. There's something over 600 lbs up there but it's solid as a rock.

Damn, can't wait to put these 20's back on this spring.

Thanks Paul. I really dig that commercial. I wonder if Jeeps can really do that.
