Ric, take a look at my profile pic. That overland is parked in a spot no BMW can reach.

Why? Simple, the x5 is an inferior and incapable off road vehicle when compared to the wk2. When compared to a Toyota Prius, really.

Tell me Rick, what does it say your x5 manual about going off road?

Cheers.

I found a new board with people who actually know what a Jeep Grand Cherokee was and should be (WK with 4.7 quadradrive 2, solid rear axle and independent front with longest wheel travel of any Grand Cherokee, oh and a rugged plastic utilitarian interior) not what they have become now. Thanks Scott (amateur) Peace out. Enjoy your WK2 wanna be X5's. Peace!!!!!
The leather dash is optional on the X5. We don't have it on our 2012 x5 diesel. The x5 and the grand Cherokee are two different beasts and it's unclear what your are getting at. The WK was a fine jeep for the time, but definitely wasn't jeep's best work. There was nothing terribly innovative about it. And while it may have had front wheel articulation the suspension was so soft and the ground clearance was awful. It's a fine jeep, but I think posting your statement in a wk2 forum and and comparing thr wk2 to the x5 ( which is also fairly capable in its own right) is just not clear or useful.

Re: WK2 Test Drive

The only thing I don't understand about the original poster is his hard-on for the 4.7 liter. I owned a GC with the 4.7. It was a piece of crap compared to the hemi.

Other than that his preference or the X5 is understandable. It's the perfect vehicle for picking up Biff and Tad for latte's and an afternoon of sweaty man-love.

Re: WK2 Test Drive

Damn this dude is a total tool bag. First off, say what you want about your old shit box, but the WK1 isn't even on the same planet as the WK2. I have owned both so it's from experience. And seriously, who trolls onto a different forum saying that kind of crap and not expect to get bashed? Well to answer my own question, you sound like a typical teenage boy who is extremely jealous.
As for the X5, then only ones that are even cool are the high end ones and those cost probably 80+ grand. Yeah no thanks. Plus my friends 2012 was bought back by the dealership because it was an absolute reliability nightmare.

Re: WK2 Test Drive

I drove the X5. It's a great road going SUV, just like a Audi Q5 or Lexus or....well, you get the idea.

But it can't go offroad to save it's life. It can't even TOUCH the WK2's abilities. If you don't get that or need that then there are better choices.

Cheers!

You are delusional if you think the wk2 is superior to all... The wk2 has 4 wheel independent bud do you even know what that means? It would be the first to break down on an expedition...Thanks to everyone for all their responses to my little experiment... it proved my hypothesis correct... The new WK2 is a VERY NICE LUXURIOUS VEHICLE for middle aged men who want COMFORT AND THE DELUSION THAT IT CAN STILL OFFROAD LIKE A WK OR WJ BECAUSE IT SAYS JEEP ON IT. That's great, there is nothing wrong with that at all I'm happy for all of you. Jeep saw an oppurtunity and they built a great vehicle for it... If you don't believe me look at your posts... you guys are dodgier than Obama at a debate... none of you posted a lifted wk2 or offroading in action, you just posted pretty pictures of your Jeep all shiny with chrome and " special" colored wheels and tint windows...If you put the same tires you have on your jeep on an X5, the X5 would go on the beach too as well as most places the WK2 would go. You seem to forget the WK2 is a Mercedes platform. It's only difference from an X5 or M-Class is the 4wd system rather than all wheel drive. That's it. Atleast BMW owners know they aren't going to take on anything more than a dirt road and buy accordingly so quit being immature and talking shit on them about reliability. Truth is they are just as reliable as the Jeep. Every manufacturer has lemon vehicles every so often its natural science. The BMW is far superior for the type of driving you guys do but you all just want the "image that you could still offroad if needed" Which is fine, there is nothing wrong with that. The 4 wheel independent wouldn't LAST THAT LONG. Just ask the Toyota guys about the FJ Cruiser. Nowadays its all about image apparently. The rest of you tried to personally attack me instead of looking at my first post and responding objectively... The truth is the WK2 is superior in on road ride and interior but the WK will always be superior in off-road ability and ruggedness. That's the truth one isn't more right than the other its all just preference. To you the WK2 is the best and I AM HAPPY FOR YOU... SERIOUSLY... To me the greatest will always be the WK with the Laredo X package and 4.7 liter with quadradrive 2 or quadratrac 2 and no chrome on the exterior and black and grey leather on the interior ... Thanks for all the responses... have a great day!

Try opening your eyes a little bit. It took 10 seconds for me to find this under "Members-Rides" (4th one down).

Re: WK2 Test Drive

wow....just go back to JU and JF...loser. Ask us to be objective and YOU have 0 objectivity. The WK just about put Jeep out of BUSINESS. Dont get me wrong...I love my WK and always will...but it was a step backwards for Jeep and the Grand Cherokee platform. From what Ive seen....I would match a stock WK2 against a stock wk2 anyday on the trails, offroading etc.

Re: WK2 Test Drive

I didn't buy my Overland to use as a POS rock crawler, if I wanted that I would buy a toy WJ or ZJ and beat the crap out of it, they're cheap enough to do that.

I bought my Overland because it was a great riding, super luxurious, full features SUV that looked great and had the capability to take us up to a ski resort or snow covered mountain to get a Xmas tree, while still being in a luxurious setting. It also works great in the summer as a comfortable road trip vehicle with the cooled seats on and the pano roof open. And it always looks good.

Is it fair to compare it to an X5? Sure. But the X5 had that typical German interior design that I didn't really care for, plus they were amazingly common back home. I could have bought a Mercedes ML, but honestly, I liked the looks outside and inside of the Jeep more. The Q7 was too big, and the Q5 I didn't like the steering wheel (but LOVED the sounds of the VR6), was a bit small too.

The GC Overland just hits all things well. Good sized, decent fuel economy, luxurious inside, great looks, rides awesome, plenty of Hemi power, and doesn't cost a small fortune in upkeep. Very happy with it, probably one of the best SUVs on the market right now.
