Last week I ordered a new Subaru Forrester for one of my guys, and by reading the newspaper knew there was a "winter pack" becoming available (I am in Australia so its winter here ).

So, I called several dealers to check on availability, none of them had any idea that this spec was on the way. Anyways, I spent some time face to face with a dealer, educated him on what was in the winter pack (leather/heated seats/bluetooth etc), and we did a deal based on the rec retail that the newspaper said it would be (of course I screwd the price down) and the car will be here by the weekend!

Unbelievable how poorly educated some dealers can be. Whether it be lack of interest or poor communication from the manufacturer, it's bad!
I can only speak on my own experience, working in new/used car sales for 2 years. I was decently successful at it if that means anything(Other than I'm a good liar! ), so...

A couple of things I noticed from my time at a TN Dodge dealership:

There is little to no support from the parent companies. The brochures you as a customer get at the front desk is about all the information we get on models. Seriously. The emails we get for training might have a tidbit or 2 of more info, but not much. In fact, there seems to be quite a bit of animosity from the parent company >> dealerships.

What little information that does come to a dealership is not passed on properly. I was the newest salesman hired, and quite often called upon to train the older guys on specs of the Dodge vehicles(coming from the assembly lines in Detroit, I had specific build/tech knowledge). I even remember having to stay late(even after 16+hours/day!) to train the fuggin sales manager!

A setup for failure if I ever saw one.

Re: WK2 Testdrive/Ordering Experience

In fact it was a simple matter of the sales manager going through his emails to find out all about the upcoming limited builds. Just slack.

You must be, like, 70 years old to have done all the stuff you say in your life? How old are you really Ron? Post a current picture of yourself, not the ones you have previously that must have been taken 30 years ago!?!? ;p

Re: WK2 Testdrive/Ordering Experience

Just called Jeep customer service today. Looks like an estimated ship date of August 9 for my Overland (ordered July 10).

So if everything goes well, I'll have mine by mid-August.

Re: WK2 Testdrive/Ordering Experience

So I called customer service again for an update. To recap: my vehicle has been in the "scheduled - ready to proceed on the line" status for about a month now with an estimated ship date of 8/2.

When I spoke to customer service the rep stated that from what they have been figuring out on their own that status means they are waiting for enough orders with those options to be taken so that they can build a whole bunch with those specs at once. I asked about the 8/2 date and she said it is probably not realistic because she didnt think there was any way for it to be built and inspected in 4 days and readied for shipping.

I know that most places are saying 6-8 weeks for shipping as my dealer did based on past experience. I know that there are a few guys here that work on the line, do you have any knowledge of whether estimated ship dates are being met or is that just a wild guess?

I ordered a black limited, 5.7, 4x4, 730 media, class IV group, in black on black.

I know that in past years, most automakers would say 6-8 weeks at least for a special order vehicle.

However, modern dealer inventories are a fraction of what they once were. The days of going to the lot and finding a car that is exactly what you want are likely over. You'll be lucky enough to find the powertrain you want to try, let alone the trim level. That's part and parcel of going from keeping a couple dozen variants of a model on the lot to about three or four of them. If you're picky, you have to order. Economics is forcing this.

The result is that automakers are going to have to cut down this lead time. It's one thing to wait if you don't need a new vehicle right this minute (although it can be annoying when planning for financing- deals may come and go in the meantime). If you do need one now, it may be the difference between, say, ordering a Grand Cherokee and buying something else. The dealers don't want that, the automaker doesn't want it. They need to get order to delivery time to no more than 4 weeks. Less would be better, but it may not be realistic. Still, my salesman said they're shooting for a 4 week time frame from order to delivery for this reason.

Re: the immediate question of est. ship dates, I wonder if they're getting closer to reality when they're only a couple weeks out. The order sheet I have (obtained it a couple weeks ago) shows a 8/4 est. ship date, and that's slipped to 8/9, which seems to coincide with the reports of the Quadra-Lift going into production.

Just doing some thinking aloud...

Fawker! But really, The pics I post are current, and I am almost 40, if that wasn't apparent. I have addressed this before. I've been working off the books since I was 9-ish, officially since I was 13(parent-signed work permits). I picked up my first wrench at 5 or 6 to start working on BMX bikes. I was poor and couldn't afford any so I had to build what I found. Did my first brake job on a 76 Chevy C10 at my uncle's repair shop when I was 9(1980). Worked all through middle-high school doing various jobs and always art on the side. In uni I always had a job, at school or summers at home, so there was a lot of bouncing around. The only long-term stint on any job was 8 years in auto factories around Detroit and 15 years working as a bouncer in the same area. A lot of those years at those 2 jobs overlapped though, not like it was consecutive. Much of my experience has been gained having 2-3 jobs at a time. I said before, I'm not your average lazy fat guy. Just a fat guy, but very active.

Exclamation For Lingohocken and Barho

Sorry, but I can't send PMs yet due to being new here on this board!

I just had a good experience with Steve Wisniewski at Greenfield Dodge/Jeep in Lawrenceville. Everyone else told me that any Jeep on the lot would be full sticker price. He said that if I were to tell him that I saw it on the internet, he would have to price my order at invoice cost. I'm waiting to order an Overland when some new features are available, but I will be ordering from this guy. You may want to contact him. swisniewski@dickgreenfield.com

I'm not a friend of his...just passing this along to "neighbors"!

Welcome aboard, Jim, and thanks for the tip. As you know, there are at least two of us in this Forum from Wrightstown, next to you in Yardley. Tried Lansdale Jeep yet?

Re: WK2 Testdrive/Ordering Experience

Yes, was in contact with them via email, but they stated that they wanted $700 over invoice for an order, and full sticker for anything on the lot. They had a white Overland on their site, but was told it was sold when I inquired about it.

Thanks Jim! And welcome!

No clue yet when I will be purchasing. Still trying to decide whether to hold off to see the SRT.

It's also tough to get rid of my 08 Laredo with the 305HP 4.7L. They only made the new 4.7L for the 08 (and maybe 09) models and its a sweet engine. That and the 08s came with lifetime powertrain warranty. I can beat this thing into the ground and then some.
