Re: WK2 top speed

I95 in broward county 100+ is definitely a common thing in the left lanes. Driving skills and knowledge helps, but yes most people do not know their cars and the roads to handle triple digit speeds.

Plus all new gc tires are rated up to 112mph with a 2psi increase. The manufacture would not limit the jeep to 110mph if it wasn't safe for the vehicle and tires to do so. It is the driver that needs training or skills to drive at higher speeds.

Please heed the advice from an old fart (me): One of my past hobbies was racing cars a few times per year. There is a lot more than just lowering a vehicle and putting on big brakes and better tires at the four corners to make it worthy of high speed. You need very stiff springs and shocks with short travel, proper ground effects and directed air flow with lots of downforce as you progress into triple digit speeds. Most of all, you need driving experience to understand the exponentially increasing physics affecting the vehicle. Street SUVs should not be running into the triple digits outside of a closed track, and even then it's a risky proposition.

A stock or performance SUV has a high profile and a lot of weight. Even if it's lowered and has a factory air damn and airfoil, an SUV becomes a very effective wind sail at mid triple digit speeds; the weight amplifies the movements at these speeds. One good gust of crosswind at 150mph, even on an SRT8, could send it off the road as the tires lose adhesion due to wind-provided lift. I've seen this happen on a closed airport runway when an SUV (Trailblazer SS - lowered, full ground effects) was accelerating in a straight line beyond ~140mph. The driver slid around uncontrollably until the vehicle slowed enough to regain traction. He was very lucky as a crash would have been fatal.

Na, just for example take a look at Porsche Cayenne Turbo - max speed is 278km/h - 172mph. And believe me, they do it on the german unlimited roads. The base Cayenne is rated at 230km/h - 142mph and the Diesel at 218km/h - 136mph.

Anyway - for me 110mph is more then enough.

Re: WK2 top speed

The fuel economy at those speeds is ridiculously awful. Just at 100mph you're probably near 10mpg in a car with these aerodynamics. I'd imagine you guys are the type that complain about your mileage while zooming around town with a foot either stomped on the accelerator or brake.

If you want to do the speeds for fun, get a car that is truly fun, not an SUV.

Are you joking? The 5.7 is not in this Jeep for roaring around town at 110mph. That is how you and others become statistics.

Drive safe.

Re: WK2 top speed

I hit triple digits regularly with my SRT...
At the 1/4 mile track that is....
Truth is it feels very stable at around 110 mph, I wouldn't mind running it at a 1 mile track and see what it can do there.

One thing I recommend to anyone thinking of exceeding triple digits in any vehicle is to be aware of the rated speed of the tires, inspect them and make sure the tire pressure is at the recommended psi. Like another member mentioned earlier, weather is a big factor, specially the wind.

Remember even at a 1/4 mile track there are risk we should all be aware of, sometimes is doesn't even have to be your vehicle sometimes it could be the guy next to you loosing traction or whatever and it can come to your lane, so always be aware of where your opponent is.

Re: WK2 top speed

WOW! Isn’t it amazing how passionate people get about defending their need for speed?
My original question was basically how I find it interesting that nobody ever complained about older SUV's (like the thumbnails I posted) doing 60-70 mph. But everyone is up in arms about modern SUV's when doing 100-110 mph. IMHO it is a lot safer doing 100 mph in a decent modern SUV compared to a 25 year old SUV doing the legal limit.
I am also not talking about racing, but about highways RATED at 100+ mph when conditions allow. Believe me when I say that it is much worse on our roads in Dubai to be the odd one out at 60mph when everyone else is doing 100.

I know the JGC is no Cayenne, but be careful when you generalise

All I am saying is…Boy! How times have changed

Re: WK2 top speed

Man how did I ever live running 130MPH+ with National XT Renegade polyester tires on a 1970 Mustang in the early 80s before there were "speed rated" tires?

Clear roads, with no one on them I've gotten my car up to 155. Don't see a problem going that fast if your car can take it and there's no one on the roads.

I've seen the OPs jeep in action and I must say being limited at 110mph and having 8 cylinders, Jeep might as well put a 4banger in it. No wonder Chrysler is so far behind GM and Ford.
Just because it has a V8 doesn't mean that it should go 150 MPH. With that car doing 110 MPH is as stable as I felt it was going to be.

I got brembos on my car and I'll tell you over 110 I'm not jamming the brakes at all. You could have any brakes, you're not stopping in 200ft if you're going 150mph. Brakes have nothing to do with triple digit speeds. If the road is clear, there's -nothing- to worry about. Any car caught going 150, even a vette, and hits a bump is going to be in trouble.

I think many people have the illusion that if a car is low it's immune from damages at high speed. We're not talking about 250mph here, we're talking over 110, meaning 130~. You're not gonna get enough air under you at 130 to fly off.
No but the higher weight, aerodynamics, higher center of gravity, poor brakes that would overheat even with someone is doing a somewhat hard braking trying to slow a SUV from 130-140 MPH has a lot to do with it. There are sedans that I wouldn't take up to those speed due to the car just not being stable. Brakes have everything to do with speed. Everything that moves have to have away to stop or even slowdown.
