wk2 transmission question

Hi all,
I am looking at purchasing a 2016 gc limited v6.
My only reservation is the 8 speed transmission.
I have owned xj's for years and loved them.
I presently own a 2014 Chrysler 300s v6, so I am very familiar with the 8 speed/v6 shift problems as I have been through it all and probably read every transmission post in all the Chrysler, dodge and jeep forums.
I do not want to go through these issues again.
So my question to the late 15 and early 16 owners,
Are the transmission issues resolved???

Thanks for any input.

Re: wk2 transmission question

Joe:
I took delivery of my MY15 in Oct. 2014. The shifting has been fine. They did one software update at an oil change for the transmission. It's gone from fine to even finer. Don't worry.

Re: wk2 transmission question

Issues were primarily early MY14 and most of that was solved via firmware/software updates. MY15 has been clean "statistically" via anecdotal evidence and MY16 should likely be considered an extension of that.

Re: wk2 transmission question

I have a MY14 built in Feb. 2013 and my transmission has been fine. Couple updates at the dealer when it's been in for oil changes.

wk2 transmission question

I had an early build '14 Limited. Transmission was terrible. Several flashes and updates and I still hated it.

My '15 transmission + new steering + Eco stays off....and it is amazing! I love the way it drives. I do not even find myself wanting more power.

I tell my wife that this is how positive the experience was supposed to be with the first one.

Edit: also loving the silver interior trim of the Altitude. : )

Re: wk2 transmission question

Early '14 Limited V6 build for me. I thought I may not keep this GC beyond the 3 years due to the transmission shifts. Got an update NOV '15 and all the problems are gone. Shifts great. Great power - maybe not as instant/ torque-y as the 4.0 XJ ( my XJ has 150,000 and still runs like it's brand new), but am very impressed with the V6. Will keep this GC for a while...unless I "need" to have a '17

Happy shopping,
Al

Re: wk2 transmission question

I have a 2015 Overland 3.6 that was built 07/15. The transmission shifts great other then when cold, 1st to 2nd it kinda jumps or something weird. No biggie.

I have 2 issues with this transmission though.

1.) Under hard acceleration 1-2 and 2-3 it makes a terrible squeak type of noise when shifting.

2.) 79mph + it will not use 8th gear. Which is really annoying. I can use the paddle shifter to put it in 8th, the back in 'D' and it will stay. Very weird.

Re: wk2 transmission question

Took delivery of the JGC in Nov. 2014. We have about 13k miles on it and the transmission is fine. It shifts a lot in traffic, but the shifts are smooth. I basically don't even notice them any more.

Re: wk2 transmission question

2015 High Altitude V6, 12-2015 date of mfr. transmission has been outstanding currently with 1380 miles. Actually shifts better than my 8spd with the Hemi.
No shift issues whatsoever in any condition. I'm very happy with it.

Re: wk2 transmission question

I know it's probably a bit late, but my input:

My 8 speed is fine except for two minor issues:

1) When cold, it lags a bit for the first couple shifts when going from 1st to second and kind of "bumps" into second. After the first few shifts, that goes away.

2) It waits too long to go from 2nd to 1st when stopping, so if I don't wait long enough, it bumps into 1st more rudely than it should as I start rolling. This happens at stop signs where I'm just doing a quick stop and go. I find to avoid the issue, I either have to do a rolling stop or sit an extra second before starting off. I can also minimize it by simply letting off the brakes and letting the torque start me rolling before I give it any gas.

Re: wk2 transmission question

I'm almost hesitant to reply to this thread, but I'll throw this out there.

I just bought a '16 Overland Hemi. It is exactly 30 days old with 2500 miles. I love it. Smooth, quiet, powerful. Shifts are like butter. I'm really impressed with the transmission, and I recently took a trip to Des Moines and back from Indy. Avg 19.5 MPG with V8 cruising at 81 mph.

But... (always a but) I have developed a small leak in the transmission. I'm pretty sure it's been there since day 1 because I will occasionally get a burnt oil odor... but I just noticed a couple of drops of oil on the garage floor before I left on my trip. When I returned I noticed several more.

I took it to the dealer this morning and they diagnosed the leak at the hydraulic pump inside the bell housing. Warranty just calls for replacement of transmission. I'm sure it's cheaper and easier to swap out the tranny and deal with it back at the factory, rather than tear it down and fix the pump. The dealer topped off the fluid (about 6 oz.) and gave me the car back to drive. They've ordered a new transmission which should be in sometime next week, and when it comes in, I'll take my car back in for the swap. Should be able to do in 1 day.

Annoying for sure. But I'm going to chalk it up as just one of those things and hope that after this, no more glitches.
