We will be in Durango for a few days the first week of October and I would love to find some "safe" but scenic routes that we could tackle without any risk to the rental vehicle. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Bolam pass. Entrance is at DMR. Thats probably the closest thing you will find near Durango.

IMO even the difficult trails in the San Juans aren't very difficult. I wouldn't hesitate to take take my wk2 over any of the difficult rated trails. I was out in that area over the 4th with my TJ, and had a blast. If your headed up towards DMR, be sure to grab a pizza at the old school house cafe just south of DMR, its fantastic.

Re: WK2 Trip - San Juan Mountains

Bump. Again. Sorry for bumping this thread multiple times, but I'm trying to plan a trip to this area with a little more detail than before, for a couple weeks from now.

Thinking of coming down into Telluride from Highway 62 / 145. I then want to take "some trail" over to Ouray. Considering Imogene Pass, but don't want anything too difficult as I'll be alone (one vehicle, multiple passengers).

Probably want to stay in Ouray for the night, and then was considering taking Engineer Pass over to Lake City, and then heading North on highway 149 to get back to Denver.

Have also been told Ophir Pass is a good one to take to see the foliage changing, so that is also a "maybe" on the list.

Trying to get an idea on timing as well. Based on my current plan, I wouldn't even be getting into Telluride until mid-afternoon. Is that too late to take Imogene Pass over to Ouray?

Is it somewhat stupid to take these trails alone (one vehicle, multiple people)? I have a 2012 WK2 with QT-II (4-lo) and 20" Nitto Terra Grapplers. I've done some off roading in the Front Range area already without many issues (Loch Lomond, Chinn's Lake, Saints John up to Wild Irishmen Mine, Russell Gulch, Mill Creek Rd @ Vail, and maybe one or 2 others).

How long does it take the go Imogene Pass from Telluride to Ouray?

I've seen people mention these trails getting crowded. I can see this as a good thing in that others are around to help if something were to happen, but also as a bad thing if the trail is too tight to pass and requires someone to back up, etc.

Am I biting off more than I can chew, expecting to hit a trail (likely Imogene) in the afternoon, then another trail (Engineer Pass) the next day?

Any other thoughts / tips?

Lot of rain here this week. Telluride to Ouray is probably three to four hours. Ophir pass is quick and easy and if you stay in Silverton, you can head over Engineer or Cinnemin(sp?) to Lake City.

I'll be in Durango and Silverton and Ouray in about 10 days. With all the rain, do you think there have been any wash-outs of the roads going over Ophir Pass or to Clear Lake? I was hoping to do both of those roads in a rental SUV, but I can't risk any damage.

Call 970/247-4874 for info as that is the San Juan National Forest visitor center and they usually have the scoop on that sort of thing.

How are the colors looking at this point?

3-4 hours to take Imogene from Telluride to Ouray?

Looking at the pictures that were taken during my trip, Imogene pass took us 4 hours (from Telluride to Ouray), Mineral Creek to Engineer Pass to Lake City took us 5 hours.

On Imogene Pass, we somehow got connected to Yankee Boy Basin road as well. So, that could have added extra time.

If the rains have not damaged the roads/trails, you should fine. Definitely do the Mineral Creek... it is fun!

Cheers,
-A

Re: WK2 Trip - San Juan Mountains

Just got back from the Ouray / Silverton Area. The colors are amazing right now. We got some snow last Sunday and then again Friday night. Nothing big but it did close down Black bear, Imogene, Engineer and Ophir Passes. We were probably one of the last ones to run Ophir and there was quite a bit of snow. The reports we got were that Imogene, Ophir and Black bear would be closed for the season but Engineer might open again. We were bummed that we didn't get to drive those but there is still plenty to do and the scenery is just amazing with the colors and snow. The rain did not harm any of the trails around there.
