The reports we got were that Imogene, Ophir and Black bear would be closed for the season but Engineer might open again. We were bummed that we didn't get to drive those but there is still plenty to do and the scenery is just amazing with the colors and snow. The rain did not harm any of the trails around there.

We just got into Durango and were planning on driving over the Ophir Pass either tomorrow or Thursday. I called the San Juan Visitors Center and they said the road over the Ophir Pass was open. I wonder if she had it wrong or if it really did reopen?

It's possible it could reopen I guess if the snow has melted. I would call one of the Jeep rental places in Silverton or Ouray. They seemed to have the most updated trail info. The ones we called were pretty helpful.

Re: WK2 Trip - San Juan Mountains

Tried to drive to Clear Lake today, but couldn't quite make it to the top in our rental Chevy Traverse. About a 1/4 mile from the lake, there were a couple of deep ruts, probably from snowmelt runoff. They were right at the beginning of that last steep section. Our tires just spun, but wouldn't give enough traction to climb out of the rut. Had to back up and turn around. A true 4-wheel drive vehicle wouldn't have any trouble up there. Will try Ophir Pass tomorrow.
