Thanks for posting, interesting read. Not sure I would pick the LR4, I don't really care about slightly better refinement, acceleration, towing and braking when you factor in it's around 10k more, uses premium fuel, has more expensive maintenence, and likely Land Rover's usual horrible reliability.

Re: WK2 VS LR4 and 4 Runner in Motor Trend

Interesting. I can't say I'm surprised the LR4 won that one- it cost about 25% more, and I'd personally be a bit shocked if that extra ten grand didn't mean something. I'd also wonder how each would hold up over 5-7 years of ownership, I have a feeling the Land Rover would be in the shop a bit more, but that's just my guess.

Also, for those lamenting the speed of the GC, even with the Hemi, I find it quite interesting as to just how little difference there was. 0-60 was a half second difference- nothing to scoff at, and indeed the LR is faster. But shortly thereafter the GC catches up- 0-80 is identical, and 0-90 has the GC getting there 0.2 seconds quicker. Quarter mile is just a tick of the clock difference (0.1 sec), and the GC is moving FASTER at that point. Handling is about spot on between the two, the only meaningful difference is braking distances, and even then 138ft isn't awful.

Can the Grand Cherokee out-perform something that costs $10,000 more? Apparently not, but it made things competitive, and that's impressive.

I guess it is all subjective, depending on the tester, one tester favors the jeep over the Land Rover check this link out.

I totally agree for 10,000 dollars less the WK2 is by the far the way to go. It is virtually head to head in all of the categories and I gather that depreciation of the Jeep will be significantly less than the LR.

Not to mention general maintenance. My wife has an Acura, and the one thing I've learned is that EVERYTHING at the premium brand dealerships is more expensive. The oil change that would be $25 at a Honda dealer is $40 at Acura. A Grand Cherokee Overland, while competing reasonably well with other premium brands like Land Rover and Lexus, is still only going to inflict Jeep prices for service (assuming you use the dealer; not everyone does).

Re: WK2 VS LR4 and 4 Runner in Motor Trend

I am interested to see how the V 6 WK2 model compares to the 4Runner in tommorrows article. I bet that the WK2 will be hands down better in almost all categories.

... and purchasing a Jeep GC supports auto workers in Detroit, and not those in the UK. Sorry for waving the flag, but this does mean a lot to me.

My nephew was just offered $32k on the trade of his Range Rover that stickered for $80k, and has just over 50k on the clock. That sort of depreciation is not trivial.

I don't think it will be so cut and dry. The 4Runner is a tried-and-true off-roader. My mother-in-law has an 07 and it's great. Electronic locking diffs, hill descent, etc. The '10 benefits from the re-worked 4.0 liter v6 that now puts out something like 290 HP compared to the 236 the same engine outputs in my Tacoma. I think the '10 4runner will be a good deal quicker than the V6 WK2.

Performance wise, I think the 4Runner will win in quickness. It will be a draw in off-road prowess. On-road behavior will go to the WK2 because it's such a cushy ride.

The WK2 will win hands-down on exterior styling. It's beautiful whereas the '10 4Runner is blocky and disproportionate. The bulging head and tail lamps aren't helping. The interior of the 4Runner is a mess. It looks like an Aiwa mini-stereo from 1997 exploded in a hard-plastics manufacturing facility.

I considered a '10 4Runner for about 3 minutes before buying the WK2. I like the 4Runner's functionality, but couldn't get over it's looks. The WK2 oozes sexy.

Re: WK2 VS LR4 and 4 Runner in Motor Trend

The article quotes quadra-lift on the overland they tested, but the photo in the article of the shifter and selec-terrain control from the test vehicle clearly doesn't show the lift controls. They are supposed to be to the right of the selec-terrain nob on Overlands that are QL equipped. The writer then goes on to mention how the air supension on the LR4 is better tuned and that the jeep had harsher impacts! Gee...wonder how that happened?
