Worth it?

Currently my 2014 JGC diesel is in the shop. It had to have 2 heads replaced in the engine due to a shuttering issue. I'm really getting tired of not having my Jeep. This time it's been 2 weeks (and counting). Before that the catalytic converter had to be replaced, that was another week or more without it - long story with many lies being told by a dealership I no longer use. Yet another dealership damaged a fender during the visor recall, which meant a week plus without my jeep while it was being repaired/repainted.

I've had it for just over 2 years, 50,000 miles on it (I drive a lot). I recently spoke with a salesperson about trading it in on a 16 exact same everything that I have in my 14. I've weighed the pros and cons before talking price and the pros were definitely winning. The lifetime warranty that wasn't offered when I purchased my 14 is now available for a 16. The biggest con is another 2 years of payments I wasn't planning on, but still manageable.

Then we talked price. While the price of the 16 was about $1500 under what I was expecting, the trade in was offensive. They offered $21,500! And then had the nerve to say "once yours is out of the shop (their shop!), we can offer $23,000." In 2 years my vehicle has depreciated in half! And the ONLY reason it's in the shop now and any other time was because of Jeep's screw up, not mine.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is it worth it to get the 16 at this point? KBB had mine around $29,000 trade in. They're pretty far off this number.

Any advice or similar stories? Thanks

Re: Worth it?

Screw that trade in offer. I have a 2014 Laredo in excellent condition, and I'm usually offered around 23-24,000 trade in. It's the base model, so I would run away from the number they offered you. I would also say screw that dealership.

Re: Worth it?

I'd find another dealer...I'm trading in my '14 Limited V6 when my '16 comes in, mileage will be around 53000 or 54000, and I'm still getting $23K. The only options I have are Nav and ORA-I, with the normal wear and tear dings. I think KBB was around 24K.

A two year old vehicle with 50K miles and a known service history is not going to net a super trade-in, especially at the dealer who's busy fixing it. When it's out of the shop, "shop around" for "trade-in" value at places like CarMax, etc., and also visit other dealers to see what interest they have in doing an attractive deal.

Re: Worth it?

Thanks everyone!

I don't know details on the lifetime warranty. Only the finance guys knew the details and of course they were at lunch. But I was promised that it was a possibility with the diesel.

When I get details I'll let you know.

Re: Worth it?

Going thru a buyback with our jeep right now and have been looking at getting the diesel in the replacement Jeep. Would of purchased the diesel in 2014 if they had lifetime warranty available, but I feel FCA didnt have enough confidence in the diesel to offer it.
looking at Maxcare lifetime on all online dealers they still dont offer it...

I doubt if it is. I'd get that in writing before I'd take the word of a finance guy.

Good luck!

Re: Worth it?

How can the service history detract from trade in value. Does the dealership not have confidence in the service dept......in the product......in the support from FCA?

My thoughts exactly.

Went to carmax today and they quoted me $23,000. This is after they told me they tend to be around the same appraisals as KBB. My jeep is in excellent condition and blue books at $28,000. Even in fair condition blue book still has it at $24,000. I'm struggling to understand why so far everyone seems to be low balling me. Trying another dealership tomorrow....

I may end up having to keep the 14 after all 😐
