Re: Wrecked WK2

I think thats one if the biggest problems wth 4wd/AWD. People think they can drive through anything at any speed just because they have a 4x4 badge on their car. It will not help you stop or corner, you can lose traction in those situations just like any other car. It will help you get out if your stuck, and better traction in a straight line though.

I have a WK2 2wd Laredo-X, I was very close to getting the 4x4 but i live in Napa, CA and it dosnt snow here at all. We go up to Lake Tahoe once a year and never when its actually snowing. I figured id be better off getting 2wd with snow tires for the winter months and just be a careful driver. Plus Ive heard that snow tires alone would work better then 4x4 with all seasons, anyone have experience with that comparison?

That's what the car magazine guys always say. But after my wife's car slid into an intersection five Winters ago, we've used snow tires on both of our cars. It makes a huge difference, particularly when cornering and stopping. I'm more concerned about the car behind me than the one in front of me with snow tires on my car.

Re: Wrecked WK2

It boggles my mind how dumb people can be. Do they think laws of physics do not apply to their vehicle? Even with winter tires they still apply.

I refuse to call events like this an accident, more correct term is "natural selection". This is a direct result of driver's actions.

Lol sorry I couldn't get a better pic, what you can't see in that pic is the heavy ass snow, the ambulance stuck trying to turn around, the state trooper sliding down the road, and the other guy putting his car into a ditch to avoid the whole mess!
On a side note, we couldn't find the battery to disconnect it, we looked in the bay, under the air box, in the trunk... And when we got back to the fire hall I googled it and its under the passanger seat!? Odd! Lol first one we had ever heard of

Re: Wrecked WK2

Still, you have to take into consideration some details from physics:
Tire companies says that stopping distance is better with 30% with winter tires as opposed to all seasons ones. Let's take it to 36%, for the easy of calculations.
Braking distance increases with the square of the speed, so square root of 36 = 6. If you drive 6% faster with winter tires than with all seasons ones, you nullify the advantage. 6% when you drive at 50 km/h (31 mph) is only 3 km/h (2 mph).
SO: if you think you have winter tires and you are good and safer, and you increase your speed by only 3 km/h (2 mph) at that speed, you brake like the "irresponsible" guy who did not install winter tires, but was driving more carefully.
So many time I got passed by people driving like crazy in snow, full of self-confidence in their winter tires .....
Morale: get winter tires, and drive like you don't have them!

^you didn't take into consideration the 90% of people that don't get winter tires, but also don't replace their bald all seasons that are showing wear bars. Cause almost every car I see has tires on it that I wouldn't drive on in the summer let alone in snow.
Moral of the story? You can't fix stupid!

First off - Great Moral (not "Morale" ) - but your math is seriously messed up. You can't square the percentage increase like that. Let's see if we can untangle it:

For the moment, let's grant your two propositions:
1) Winter tires improve stopping distance by 30%
2) Braking distance increases with the square of the speed

If you are going at speed X with a normal braking distance of Y, then putting on winter tires would cut the distance to .7Y. If you increase your speed by 6%, you are now going 1.06X and your braking distance increases to 1.06 x 1.06 x .7Y or about .79Y. So in your model you still have much better braking than with street tires. You would have to increase your speed somewhere around 20% (in your model) to neutralize the advantage of the winter tires.

In real life though, the model has other issues. That whole issue of stopping distance going as the square of the speed is for dry pavement. With ice, the equations are non-linear and it can often take MUCH farther to brake once you lose traction - the key is keeping some kind of grip (which the winter tires will do a much better job of.)

So in the end, your advice is great advice. I'd let you teach my daughter how to drive (but not math .)
