Well one of our 15+ car accidents so far today was a new WK2, strait away on level ground and he plowed through a pole. Combo of terrible stock tires and a not so smart driver id say. All 4 inside went to the hospital and the engine block looked done to me, id say shes tottalled. Sorry for the iffy pic but you get the idea.
We have about 6 inches of snow and are expected to get another 6 or more! http://www.flickr.com/photos/58559345@N05/6292122945/http://www.flickr.com/people/58559345@N05/
but at least the headlamps still work(lol) i do feel sorry for the occupants, hope they were not injured seriously. looks like it did hold up well looking at the drivers side door alignment
Just minor injury, mainly from the airbags. About 100 yards away a WK came around the corner with way to much speed and ditched it into the woods lol..... PA drivers...
Unfortunately you see too much of this with AWD/4WD vehicles early in the winter. Overconfidence due to super improved straight ahead traction over 2WD. But AWD/4WD does not improve cornering or stopping in this weather. Too bad.
My bad lol I was in a hurry, I wont hear how they made out but all four were transported via ambulance with minor injury's, someone had a busted nose and I believe chest pain from the bags and someone complaining of neck pain, but nothing life threatening.
I am for sure more confident driver with wk2, but 24 years of driving expirience also helpful and more important. Roads is horrible today and I saw tons of similar things in NJ, people need to learn how to drive and keep distance, how And when to replace bold tires, how and why to buy winter tires, how to use hands free and stop talking on phone while driving, etc
Just goes to show, no matter what technology your ride have. It all comes down to the person operating the machine.
Hope they all recover without any serious complications.
and the weather conditions. Not saying what the cause was, but even a safe driver can end up in an accident, black ice for example isn't visible and could very easily cause you to go off the road if you lose traction and/or steering. Thus its not always the driver, but alot of times it is, because they were going to fast or following to closely, talking on the phone, txting etc etc
Id say he was just going to fast for the conditions and ditched it. While we were standing there we saw two more go into the woods and one of the ambulances almost needed a tow, it was some crazy weather around here today!
Here in Dallas we don't get snow, we get sleet and ice. Now obviously the safest course of action when driving on ice is == don't drive on ice.
That said, I have a general question about 2WD, 4WD and AWD when driving on ice. Is anything going to help? What technology in the WK2 would be useful in ice in terms of traction or sliding?
Next time you are in a parking lot, take a look at some of the tires on the vehicles there. The number of tires with illegal tread, even balding tires is scary. This is a also major reason for winter crashes. What worries me is that they may slide into me.
People are idots to be blunt. Its worth investing in a nice set of tires rather then risking your safety and others safety just to drive in snow and play bumper cars! It woulda saved me a lot of time yesterday from responding to all those accidents!
My wife's 2012 Infiniti M37x AWD came with Primacy MXM tires. No problems with them on the road today, despite the 15 inches of snow that we got last night, well, except for all of the downed trees in the road. I already have a nice set of alloys with Blizzaks in the garage for her, but thought that it was too early to put them on. I hate that Jeep pawns off Latitude Tours as on/off road tires.
I think thats one if the biggest problems wth 4wd/AWD. People think they can drive through anything at any speed just because they have a 4x4 badge on their car. It will not help you stop or corner, you can lose traction in those situations just like any other car. It will help you get out if your stuck, and better traction in a straight line though.
I have a WK2 2wd Laredo-X, I was very close to getting the 4x4 but i live in Napa, CA and it dosnt snow here at all. We go up to Lake Tahoe once a year and never when its actually snowing. I figured id be better off getting 2wd with snow tires for the winter months and just be a careful driver. Plus Ive heard that snow tires alone would work better then 4x4 with all seasons, anyone have experience with that comparison?
That's what the car magazine guys always say. But after my wife's car slid into an intersection five Winters ago, we've used snow tires on both of our cars. It makes a huge difference, particularly when cornering and stopping. I'm more concerned about the car behind me than the one in front of me with snow tires on my car.
Lol sorry I couldn't get a better pic, what you can't see in that pic is the heavy ass snow, the ambulance stuck trying to turn around, the state trooper sliding down the road, and the other guy putting his car into a ditch to avoid the whole mess!
On a side note, we couldn't find the battery to disconnect it, we looked in the bay, under the air box, in the trunk... And when we got back to the fire hall I googled it and its under the passanger seat!? Odd! Lol first one we had ever heard of
Still, you have to take into consideration some details from physics:
Tire companies says that stopping distance is better with 30% with winter tires as opposed to all seasons ones. Let's take it to 36%, for the easy of calculations.
Braking distance increases with the square of the speed, so square root of 36 = 6. If you drive 6% faster with winter tires than with all seasons ones, you nullify the advantage. 6% when you drive at 50 km/h (31 mph) is only 3 km/h (2 mph).
SO: if you think you have winter tires and you are good and safer, and you increase your speed by only 3 km/h (2 mph) at that speed, you brake like the "irresponsible" guy who did not install winter tires, but was driving more carefully.
So many time I got passed by people driving like crazy in snow, full of self-confidence in their winter tires .....
Morale: get winter tires, and drive like you don't have them!
^you didn't take into consideration the 90% of people that don't get winter tires, but also don't replace their bald all seasons that are showing wear bars. Cause almost every car I see has tires on it that I wouldn't drive on in the summer let alone in snow.
Moral of the story? You can't fix stupid!
