X country

The family and I are moving from California to Ontario, and we have decided to do a cross country albeit with a couple of detours so we could visit Death Valley and Grand Canyon.

We are towing a small U-haul sports trailer to make more room for the cat and dog inside the Jeep. Millage hasn't been so good thus far because of all the mountain driving and the extra 1200 lb of the trailer plus the Thule rack. I expect this to improve as we move onto more flat terrain.

The scariest part so far has been brake overheating at the end of Sonora Pass in the Sierra Nevada. The brakes almost stopped responding and gosh there was a lot of smoke coming from them. We had to stop for 15 min to let them cool off. I typically use manual shift but I guess I was too distracted with the scenery.

The brakes no longer feel as responsive as at the beginning of the trip so I guess they are due for an early retirement.

I will update if anything else out of the ordinary happens.

On another note, I have seen lots of WK2's and Durangos at the more touristic spots. Most of them must be rentals because they look like plain vanilla Laredos and Crews, but I've seen a few Limiteds and Overlands as well.

Re: X country

i've driven (and ridden) cross country several times - always fun trips. i can see how the WK2 would be a great vehicle for the trip. Drive safe.

Re: X country

Good luck with your move. Hope the kids + dog + cat adjust to Canada. It's beautiful up there, and the people are wonderful.

A big second to all you say. I worked for decades with Canadians in Quebec and Ontario, and only wish I had had more opportunity to head farther west. They're surprisingly friendly to Yanks, although the seemingly endless winters are a real challenge east of the BC coast. The upside of all that cold and snow is that the country is absolutely made for Jeeps. Enjoy!

Re: X country

Hope you have a safe trip. If you're up here soon you may catch the "colour" of fall leaves, provided we don't get high winds to knock them down. Have fun!

Re: X country

Thanks guys! I am sure I am going to love Canada and its people at least as I have loved the US and Americans for the seven years I have lived in the US.

@Cherodude I lived in New England for five years so I am kind of used the fall and its colors. I actually do miss it a lot as I do miss the snow. Well except for the shoveling I mean

Re: X country

Agreed on the snow shoveling, but at least you have the vehicle for it!

What part of Ontario? The climate varies quite a lot over this large province (it can take three days to drive across it). Up here in Ottawa, we call Toronto 'the banana belt' since their winters are much milder than here.

Re: X country

@ JayB - Noob thing I guess. I had been to Yosemite before with the WK1 and it didn't seem very demanding. With all the frenzy of the move I didn't research enough on the Sonora Pass. Nevertheless, if I had to do it again I would still take Sonora Pass which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever driven by -- I would of course be a lot more careful and employ manual shift more often.

@ Cherodude - Kingston which I believe is two hours away from you. By the way, do you know anything about Kingston's dealers and how they compare to Ottawa's?

Re: X country

Sorry, I don't know the Kingston Jeep dealers. But its a great small city, sometimes called the Limestone City for its original stone buildings. They get solid winters there, but a a bit earlier spring melt than Ottawa.

Re: X country

Sounds like it's gonna be darn cold. A friend from Ottawa whom I met in Boston used to comment on how mild winters were in Boston
