Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

the xenons look just as good as they do on my Acura TSX. I've only ever turned on smart beam on road trips away from cities (mountain and desert roads). They seem to work as they should.. no complaints.

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

The thing that bugs me a little is that Smartbeam will not activate high beams unless vehicle speed is over about 25 or 30 mph. OK, so it doesn't want to blind pedestrians or such in suburbia.

But if you are creeping along in a deserted area trying to read a new street sign or see some other thing you're SOL. Have to switch to manual headlights. No big deal, but ...

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

Question: Does it somehow know to dim when a car is ahead and brights would shine into it?

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

From the Owner's Manual:

"SmartBeamTM — If Equipped
The SmartBeamTM system provides increased forward lighting at night by automating high beam control through the use of a digital camera mounted on the inside rearview mirror. This camera detects vehicle specific light and automatically switches from high beams to low beams until the approaching vehicle is out of view."

And it works very well, dimming both for uncoming cars and also when you are gaining on the tailamps of a slower car ahead of you.

any idea if the brightness is increased or decreased according to light conditions,i owned 2 wj in the past and to me it looks like they were much brighter than the wk2.

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

The zenons are either on low or high beams, without any in-between brightness setting. Both beam settings are bright, with a very clean white colour.

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

It is interesting that reflected tail lights of parked cars to not trigger the lights to auto-dim. I wonder how these look DIFFERENT than the tail lights of live vehicles, which do cause the lights to auto-dim.

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

The Xenons on my 2011 Overland are nice. Not as nice as the one's on the '08 M3 I just sold but a lot better than halogens. For the 20 miles I was using smartbeam on a county road it worked great.

I wondered the same thing and concluded that the digital camera is center weighted for sensitivity. Center of the field is where the other car lights are located most often.

Understand that there aren't 2 beams, it's one beam with a shutter to block off the top of the light for "low" beams. The single beam is also electronically aimed to point to an imaginary point ahead of the vehicle regardless of vehicle load or height (the angle will change between OR1 and Aero height on an overland).

Maybe it's due to US regulations or maybe because it cost more but the technology behind the smart beam system can do so much more than simply drop the shutter in a binary manner. I like the way ours works but I can't wait for the next generation always on system (the 3rd system they describe here) -> http://www.gentex.com/automotive/pro...driving-assist

Re: Xenon headlight and SmartBeam

I wonder if the HID levelers are used in smartbeam like they say can happen in the video linked above. It would be nice if the lights could be tilted up and down as required to give maximum visual distance.
