Red face 08 Patriot computer problem?

The transmission has started to not want to engage into drive at times. Took it to a parts store for a code read. Store person said it read the cam shaft sensor. Put that on and took it back for another read. Now they say the computer is going out. Now that would be the ECU correct? Once replaced, will it have to be programmed? Any idea how to do that without taking it to a dealership? I have been told it will cost me close to $1600 to buy part and program it. Ouch! Not in my budget, and this is my only vehicle. Help please.

Re: 08 Patriot computer problem?

Not familiar with your jeep, but if you really will need a new PCM (powertrain control module), there are places where they sell refurbished ones, or you can send yours in for repair. When you give the required info to them, then they can pre-program the PCM for you.
But do you know which code(s) it was giving? Sometimes they are a bit too easy to tell you to buy some new part, while at the end it was something different.
