Re: Best oil for Hemi?

Hmm, anyone try the Mobil 1 0W-20? AdvanceAuto currently has a sale for 5 quarts and mobil 1 filter for $30. They didn't have enough 5w-20 in stock so I took the 0W-20. Is this ok? Haven't used it yet, so can still return if needed. Thoughts?

I'd personally only run the 5W-20 as required for proper MDS function.

Re: Best oil for Hemi?

Unless you get your oil analyzed, these really are just "which bottle do I like" Here are 3 analysis. One royal purple 5w20 on a 7 year run and 2 mobil 1 0w40.

Re: Best oil for Hemi?

I went with the Mobile 1 because Pep Boys has it on sale 5 qts and filter for 35$ and they also had Royal Purple on sale 5 qts and filter for 50$. I'm not sure what was put in before I bought my jeep so this will be my first oil change... hope to notice a difference. Thanks for all the info everyone

Re: Best oil for Hemi?

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil 5W-20 in my Jeep. I also use the K&N Oil filter with every oil change which I do every 5000 miles. I hope this answers your question.

Re: Best oil for Hemi?

Royal Purple does not improve mpg, as I used it for 2 oil changes; the hemi runs rougher on RP and the MDS does not function properly either. This is becasue RP is thicker than what they spec, which you can see when you pour it. I switched to Valvoline Synpower, which is superior to Mobil 1, and the hemi runs much better and smoother than it did on RP.

I've used 0w-x oil in a couple vehicles with MDS/DOD/whatever, with no ill effects to the camshaft mechanism. Mind you, this is my first HEMI and I haven't changed my own oil in it yet, it may act differently as this engine seems to run a little hotter than the LS's I'm used to.

I'm getting pretty close to doing oil change #2 (dealer did the first one as a freebie, then sent me a "coupon"* for the next one at $35). I'll probably go with Mobil1 or Syntec, or maybe Synpower. I'll save the RP for my RX-8, which literally burns the oil anyway

*fine-print on the coupon reveals $35 includes up to 5 quarts of oil(!), HEMI engines extra! How can I pass that deal up?
