DIY Oil Changes ?

I've always done my own, and now will continue to do so with my new Jeep. Having to use Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic brings up a cost issue I never paid much attention to before.

The HEMI takes 7 quarts. My local Wal-Mart sells 5 quart jugs of the stuff for $27.17. That comes to $5.43 a quart. They also have it in 1 quart bottles, but for $7.47 a quart. So I'm just going to buy a couple of the 5 quart jugs, and one of these:

Lumax Silver 2 Quart Galvanized Measure Can with Flex Spout

Then I'll just keep the remaining 3 quarts left over for the next oil change. I can't see paying another $4 bucks for the convince of quart size bottles..... But then again, I'm cheap. Wal-Mart has Mopar oil filters for around $6 bucks as well. So I'm looking at around $44.00+ tax for an oil change. Not too bad. I'm finding none of the chain auto parts stores can even come close to what Wal-Mart charges for top of the line synthetic oil and filters. They're like 30% to 40% more.

I've started doing the same thing. I have 2 empty quart bottles and fill each of them from a 5 quart jug. Can't believe it took me so many oil changes to figure this out. It is cheaper than buying 2 quarts each oil chane.

Re: DIY Oil Changes ?

I just did the same thing tonight. No way I am going to pay 80 dollars for my oil change. I bought 2 filters and enough oil to do 2 changes for $85. Once I found the oil drain and filter it didn't take me long to change the oil.

Re: DIY Oil Changes ?

yeah i use the same oil love it ,the cost of the 5qt jug at wallymart is good but the single quarts they kill you on you are still saving about 30 to 35 if you figure going to oil change place ,also it is nice to get a good look at the under side.
