GEtting ready to change brake pads-just a couple quick question..

hey guys, i'm getting ready to change my brake pads right now. I just had a couple quick questions. Where is a good jack point for the front and rear? also do i absolutely need jack stands if i have good floor jack? if so where to put the stands?
as you guys can tell, i am a newb when it comes to stuff like this. About as far as it goes with me is changing oil and plugs. I've just never tried alot of stuff. Hopefully i can do this. With money being tight these days i cant just take it to the shop for every simple little thing any more. Also i've never had a vehicle i've gotten so attached to as the jeep. I actually like working on the thing. And i've just had it for three or four months. I changed my first spark plugs last week. Easy as pie. I let you guys know how it went. THanks in advance for ANY tips you might have on this. Later fellas...

DO NOT ever buy the cheapest pads at autozone. i put this set on in december, about 4k miles ago and their squeaking like h__l. It almost sounds like metal to metal already.

I def. advise to use a jackstand.

de-glaze the rotor and you shouldnt get squeaking. To deglaze just simply take some sandpaper to the rotor or have them turned

Re: GEtting ready to change brake pads-just a couple quick question..

the lift points in the rear is the rear axle and i cant remember the front of the top of my head. jackstands are a must and you can find them for $20 at walmart, harbor freight, sears, etc. buy the second tier pads from autozone and they come with a lifetime warranty as long as you keep the receipt. i just put on wagner thermoquiets and there is no noise or brake dust. i picked up all four wheels for $81. just follow what scott said for the rotors unless they are warped. then you should replace them.

what grit sandpaper should you use? Do just need a light sanding and then spray off with some brake cleaner?

Re: GEtting ready to change brake pads-just a couple quick question..

ALWAYS USE JACKSTANDS! You're life is worth it
and as far as jacking her up:

Front Jack/Lift Point

OR

There are a couple safe lift points on the front but if you plan on using a jackstand you will want to used the flat portion where the side frame rail runs up and almost meets the front crossmember. Its flat and solid looking you can tell pretty obviously as its the only thing under there that looks like you can get your jack on.

Then if you look a little in front of that (towards front of car) you'll see the spots they designed for jack stand. Its a metal bracket with a hole that is attached the the front crossmember and is perfect for your jackstand. Just place it under there so the y is cupping the hole, should look like nice fit,and you're good to go
