Idle Air Control..."if it ain't broke", etc. etc. :)

Hello, all. My '95 Cherokee idle was just a bit low. I did a tight U-turn once and the engine stalled, so I decided to clean the IAC. The cleaning caused major rough idle, a bad smell, and a coughing of the engine when accelerating from a stop. I decided to replace the IAC, but now I still seem to have the same "miss" (kinda like a mini-backfire under load, but less obvious. This rough idle and cough was not there before my "fix". Initially, I took off the part next to the IAC by mistake, but I put it back on the same way when I realized my mistake. But I can't imagine that that action should be the cause of the idle problems. Any thoughts? Thx, Peter
