The morning tic. 05 jeep liberty 3.7. 188,000 miles Upon a cold start with temps below 40. I get a tic. But it is rhythmic in nature. Starts off soft and then it builds in sound. Then it just stops. Then 5 to 10 seconds later it repeats. tic tic tic Tic Tic TIC TIC TIC TIC TIC stops run smooth then it repeats. As it warms up the tic gets shorter in duration till it just stops. Hooked up my obd2 reader and was just watching it while the tic was happening. Then I noticed that when the tic was not there the advance was showing less than 9.0 degrees. But as the advance started to increase the tic would start . By the time the advance bummed 12.0 + is when the tic was the loadest. Then the advance would drop back to around 9.0 degrees and that's when the tic would stop. Then as the advance started to increase, the tic would come back. Then when the advance dropped back to around 9 the tic would stop. As the temperature incressed the tic would start to get quiter at the 12.0 degrees of advacne and go away at 10. Then 11.00. Till the tic would just disappear .
This tells me it's an ignition ping. Not the lash adjusters. Changed spark plugs 8,000 mile ago with iridium.
Is the tic causing damage?
Why is it doing this?
Can it be fixed?
