I'm working on redoing the rear drum brakes on my 1981 Jeep Cj-7. When I started the project, I noticed a large amount of gear oil on the drum assembly and realized the rear axle seals were leaking. Only problem is, I cannot get the axles out to replace them! The Chilton manual says the axles will come out with a puller and that there are no c-clips, but it sure seems like there are clips on it. Do I need to take off the rear differential cover to pull the axles? Help......

Fixed the issue myself and thought I'd share the solution. After taking off the drum and related components, remove the bolts holding the axle in place. This next part can be done with an axle puller and slide hammer, but if you don't have one here's the trick. Take the new drum (or old if you still have it) and put it on the axle backwards (concave portion facing you). Take 3-4 of the lug nuts and screw them on the lugs, only enough to stay on the lug and leaving enough space that you can slide the drum and use it as the slide hammer. You have to get aggressive with it, but 5-6 solid slides and the axle will pop right out.
