WJ HID reverse lights ~~ A Different way..

So another member on here asked me to help him with some HID reverse lights, and since I didn’t take pictures when I installed his quad tails I decided to take some and do a how-to of this.

I know there is a how-to already for this, but mine is a little different.

Tools Used:

So the first thing is to take the tail light assembly off. It’s just 2 screws and 2 ball studs; Remove the 2 Philips screws and pop the light out. Then un-plug the wire harness, and remove the last cover/bulb as seen here.

Then take a flathead screwdriver and pry out the bulb socket from the cap.

On the bottom is the piece we just took out: It may sound likr it breaks, but that’s fine since we don’t need it.

Now drill a small pilot hole as close to the center as you can. With that done use a step up drill bit to make the hole big enough for the light bulb to squeeze all the way through it.

At this point the hardest part is done. All that you need now is to epoxy the bulb onto the mounting piece. Make sure you hold it together firmly until it’s dry! When doing this try not to get it on the yellow rubber if you do it may be hard to re-install the socket.

With the bulb ready to install we need to connect the power to it. Look at the harness for the tail lights that
we disconnected earlier and you will need to find a SOLID BLACK wire (Ground) and connect that one with the T-Tap to the Black wire on the HID connector. Now find the PURPLE/BLACK wire and connect that one to the RED wire on the hid harness.

You should have only the top 2 wires connected at this point. The bottom 3 are for the quad tail-light mod done previously.

Now pop the bulb that you made into its factory socket; plug in the HID harness, Set the Ballast into the cavity under the light, pop the light assembly back on, do the same on the other side, and ENJOY!

Left is HID, and right is stock.

Optional: YOU can add relay’s which I will be adding to this at a later date. You can use some silicone to get a better seal when installing bulb back into housing(I didn’t because it wasn’t needed). You can also use electrical tape over all of the connections just to make sure they don’t go anywhere.

Any questions please feel free to ask.

Good write up. Thanks for sharing. What size bulb did you use for your install? Also, do you have night pics of the beam pattern? I've been waiting for the weather to clear up some to do this mod.

I don't have any night pics yet. I will take a few this weekend though. Its not going o have a good pattern as far as light goes.

They are reverse lights, so not needed or designed to have a good pattern. As far as bulbs go: you can really use any size you want with this method. You would just make the hole you drill either smaller or larger.

Well I guess beam pattern was a bad term, light output wouldve been better. They obviously arent going to project like rear fogs, but I was curious to know if they did make it any noticeable difference while backing up over the stock halogens.

Ryan, thanks for the bulb size.

Re: WJ HID reverse lights ~~ A Different way..

Seems to me like you would be done reversing by the time the bulbs warmed up to full brightness?
Or is it just my ballasts that take a few seconds to get fully bright?

Yep about a 2 second warm up time, but even before hand they are brighter than the stock ones.

Ryan, thanks for the bulb size.
I see now. I think it does, I'll let ryan really answer that though. It's actually his Jeep I did it to.

On a side note; One of his ballasts went ont, so it's only one light right now until we replace the bad one. Just the one lights up a lot more than the stock 2 bulbs.

Re: WJ HID reverse lights ~~ A Different way..

I have noticed 10+ times better output of light from the drivers seat and that is only with 1 HID since the other one ballast broke. i just received new ballast today will install and post pics maybe tomorrow night
