Yeah, I have heard of it also. In fact, in the article that I have read, it said that the stepped-up investigation is what the federal regulatory agency calls an Engineering Engineering Analysis. The next step in the agency protocol would be to launch a recall campaign. But Chrysler Group LLC, now controlled by Fiat SpA, denied the conclusion in a June 14 statement, saying it doubts the matter will lead to a recall. It said that Grand Cherokees are neither defective nor do their fuel systems pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety in rear impact collisions. Article source: NHTSA expands Jeep gas tank fire probe.

5.1 MILLION vehicle possibly recalled for 15 fatalities and 46 injured on vehicles that some of which have been on the road since 93... I am no decider on the topic and no fatality is acceptable but the fact that the guy mentioned in florida, he was trapped in the freaking car, this was not just a love tap, they were PLOWED into or other systems in the vehicle were in disrepair (another thing to consider, when you have 1k dollar 20 yr old vehicles, there have been alot of hands working on these vehicles and a lot of problems not repaired on these vehicles. What tank would remain intact 100% of the time in an accident like that? I really dont see anything coming of this.

While I absolutely agree with Chrysler's decision on this, and think the NHTSA completely overstepped its bounds here, Chrysler/Jeep IS taking a pretty dramatic hit in the public eye. Maybe it would have been cheaper to just retrofit something? That *would* set a very bad precedent though -- that manufacturers are responsible for making sure their vehicles meet safety standards NOT yet in place when the vehicle is manufactured. Totally ridiculous:

I spoke with Jeep/Chrysler. The fix Is the instalation of a mopar tow hitch. If there is an aftermarket hitch they will replace it with a factory item. If you don't have one they will install the factory item.
The fix does not address the fuel filler neck or a shut off valve or other gas tank shielding.
I have the mopar factory hitch so all I'm getting is the free "saftey inspection".
I wonder how much work this inspection will drum up to counter the cost of the tow hitch and rear bumper instalations????

In a way it's like drug companies being held responsible for drugs that passed FDA approvals and later developed problems. The FDA is never held responsible, at least that I know about.
