'05 Cherokee starting problem

Hope I'm in the right thread.

Been having trouble starting my '05 lately (270k + miles) after it sits for more that a day. The engine starts momentarily then shuts off (like starving for gas). Have to pump gas pedal to start again after first shutdown. After a few tries it starts & runs fine. It will start Ok the rest of the day but if I let it sit roughly beyond 24 hours it's back to having starting issues again.

No check engine light. Runs peppy, no bogging at high speeds, etc. Does appear to be responding quicker than normal. I mean when I give it gas it speeds up quickly.

This is the 6 cylinder with fuel injection. I'm not a mechanic but is there a mechanism that acts like a carb choke? The symptoms to me are very similiar to how an engine would act with a choke problem.

Crankshaft positioner?, fuel filter?, fuel pump? fuel leak?, Suggestions?? Not garaged so I wouldn't smell gas very readily if there is a leak.

Re: '05 Cherokee starting problem

Not familiar with the Cherokee, but tbis sounds as that the fuel pressure in the fuel rail is slowly bleeding away. Could be a leaking fuel injector, or the pressure regulator. So now the question is where the pressjre regulator sits on the Cherokee. On the Grand Cherokee its part of the fuel filter, which sits in front of the rear axle.
Next time before starting it after a long time off, prime the fuel system first: ignition switch off/run three times and then start. If starting better this way, it proofs to be the regulator.

Re: '95 Cherokee starting problem

OOOOPS. It's a '95 Cherokee, 6cy. Sorry for the typo. I checked a few online diagrams to find out where the fuel pressure regulator is located and they said on the gas rail near the front of the engine. I checked and it isn't there. Anyone else know where the regulator is located on a '95 Cherokee?

Should be sticking off the front of the rail.

I believe on the 96+ models it was located in the fuel pump assembly, so maybe if your pump was ever replaced they just got one of those? (That is pure speculation on my part, but if it's missing from the fuel rail, maybe that's where it went?)

You may want to try gently cleaning your IAC valve though to solve the issue, what one might think is a lack of fuel could also be a lack of air :-)
