05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Hey guys I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L. Was cruising at about 50km/h when I felt it stumble go back to normal then stumble again within a few seconds and die. Never started back up.
So now it doesn't crank until I put it in neutral but still no start and asd relay clicks like crazy. Tried swapping relays with same result. Tried spare key with same result.
I pulled one spark plug per cyl to make sure there was no damage and they all look perfect.
I do find that when it cranks it's a very erratic.
I'm thinking timing chain tensioner?
When it hesitated there were no strange sounds so I don't suspect any mechanical damage.
Let me know what you guys think.

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Did you check if there is fuel pressure? There should be a schräder valve at the fuel rail, from which you can press the core and see if fuel under pressure comes out. If you have fuel, then remove one spark plug (easiest one) and connect it to its coil and see if you have spark while cranking.
Does it now only crank in N and not in P?
Did you check the battery voltage? The clicking ASD relay could point to a too low voltage. If you have a charger, charge the battery first and try to start again.

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Still only cranks in N...unless I jump the ADS relay then it will crank in P or N but still can't hear the fuel pump. I've heard that if crank and cam sensors are not synchronized or have gone bad they can cause the ADS relay to be activated. I checked the 5V reference signal to the cam sensor and that's good. Tomorrow I will try to monitor the sensors with my predator while cranking to determine if I have a bad one and check compression as well since spark plugs are out. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated! I'm currently driving my winter WJ 4.0L and that's no fun at all except for the better fuel mileage!lol

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

ASD relay and starter relay are both controlled by the PCM. I wonder if a bad cam or crank sensor will cause the problems you are seeing now. The ASD relay should be activated for some seconds, even without a signal from the cam or crank sensor. Could well be a problem with the PCM itself.

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

I'm thinking along the same route. If I jump the rely she will crank in P but that's about it. Just emailed Johan to see if maybe he has some tips for me as he did mr CMR tune which is awesome. I'm new to Chrysler so trying everything I can

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Funny you mention the starter relay. When I'm cranking it in N the ADS relay is constantly clicking and it seems the starter relay follows that as the crank is on-off-on-off in a very quick fashion. I'm now certain this is and electronic issue.

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

So I have an update.....she's running again!!! Scanned car with a real scanner, lots of U0100 faults for no communication with ECM. Checked power and ground at ECM, was missing ignition on pin 11.
Found blown 10A fuse in pass compartment. Replaced fuse and all back to normal. Still not sure why that ign fuse blew and what else is on that circuit but I'm gonna look into it

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Interresting find. Was it fuse 24 on the junction block? That one feeds, besides the PCM, also the transmission control relay, AC compressor clutch relay, fuel pump relay, front control module and the stop lamp circuit.

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

I'd have to confirm the fuse number. I can tell you it was a 10A fuse in the lower row of the driver compartment fuse block. I can also tell you that the Fuel injector fuse in the engine bay had no power as well.

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Can anyone confirm what circuits are powered by this ignition fuse?

Re: 05 Wk stumbled, stalled will no longer start

Fuse 10 on the junction block is getting power via the run relay and is feeding the rear window defogging relay, blower motor relay, upper switch bank, lower switch bank, AC heater control panel, electronic overhead panel, final drive control module and the park assist module.
Strangely enough there is no feeding to the PCM nor ignition. Are you sure it was this fuse number?
